Skyhawks Swept By Post

Waterbury, Conn. - Host Post University scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh in game one and then got a strong pitching performance in the nightcap to take both games of a non-league doubleheader against Stonehill on Wednesday afternoon at Municipal Stadium.

The losses drop the Skyhawks to 7-6 on the season with their first Northeast-10 games slated for Saturday and Sunday against Assumption.

In the first game, the Eagles scored first, getting to Stonehill senior Matt Giusti (Hopkinton, Mass.) with a pair of doubles and an error.

The Skyhawks took the lead in the top of the third when Matt Skane (Mashpee, Mass.) doubled with two outs, scoring both Angelo Bruno (Norwalk, Conn.) and Kyle Shepard (Boxford, Mass.).

Post put together three runs in the fifth to chase Giusti with the big blow being a two-run triple by Eagles' shortstop Jeff Lundell.

As they did earlier, the Skyhawks answered back immediately. This time it was Shepherd, who singled home Javier Guzman (San Juan, P.R.) from second base. Stonehill tied the game in the top of the seventh when Nick Nardacci (Glenmont, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single and eventually scored on a passed ball.

A leadoff single from Dan Luisi in the bottom of the seventh, was followed by a sacrifice, moving him over to second with one out. The Skyhawks and pitcher Alex McCormick (South Weymouth, Mass.) looked to be out of trouble after an intentional walk and an infield popup. With two outs, Johnny Figeroa, however, singled home the game winning run.

Game two saw Post's Ben Shoenberg toss a complete game, seven-inning,four-hit shutout. He didn't walk a batter and had three strikeouts.

Ryan Healey (Lynn, Mass.) gave Stonehill its best scoring opportunity with a leadoff double in the fifth, but he was stranded there following a pair of groundouts to third and a fly out to right.

The Eagles got single runs in each of the first three innings off of starter Shane Penzone (Hudson, Mass.), who went 5.1 innings, yielding six hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out three.

Tyler Wilschetz provided the offense for Post going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

In addition to Healey's double, Stonehill got singles from Mitch Davis (Bow, N.H.), Nate Weber (Hanson, Mass.) and Rob Von Stein (Trumbull, Conn.).

Stonehill will play a doubleheader in Worcester on Saturday before its home opener against the Greyhounds on Sunday.
