1980 Softball
Sport(s): Softball
Inducted: 2001

The 1980 softball squad posted the best winning percentage in school history (.941) under Head Coach Dr. Fred C. Petti ’63. In just its second season of varsity competition, the Lady Chieftains notched a 16-1 record during the 1980 campaign and captured the Massachusetts Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (MAIAW) championship with a 6-3 victory over Westfield State in the title game. Stonehill went undefeated during the regular season, posting a 13-0 mark under Petti, who was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. The MAIAW championship game win over Westfield State enabled the Lady Chieftains to avenge their only setback of the season, as Stonehill finished the year as the top ranked team in New England. Petti guided the Lady Chieftains to an overall record of 131-61-1 (.681), as he ranks as the winningest softball coach in school history.
