Rev. Jack McCarthy has been at Stonehill since 1964 and served as the unofficial chaplain for the athletic teams. Father McCarthy traveled anywhere to watch a Stonehill athletic event. He’s a true basketball fan. During his tenure as Stonehill, the Class of 1968 dedicated their yearbook in his honor. Father McCarthy has married many Stonehill athletes and baptized their children, traveling anywhere on the East Coast to perform ceremonies. A native of the Bronx, N.Y., Father “Mac” was ordained a priest on December 6, 1958. He was an officer in the United States Navy during World War II. After  his ordination, Father “Mac” taught at Notre Dame High School in Connecticut. He also taught at Bennington Catholic High School in Bennington, Vt. Father “Mac” has done parish work in New York City as well as serving as a hospital chaplain.

Father McCarthy, who was director of Campus Ministry, received his B.S.B.A from Notre Dame University and his M.A. from Holy Cross College. Father NcCarthy has been called by members of the Stonehill community a model of generosity and consistency. His support of athletics earned him a tribute from Rev. Richard Sullivan, the college president when McCarthy arrived at Stonehill. Father McCarthy was given the Benaglia Award at graduation ceremonies in 1983 for his dedication to needs of Stonehill students.
