Bill Nixon was a 1953 Stonehill graduate from
Brockton who went on to a brilliant 37-year coaching career at
Oliver Ames High School in Easton. Since 1970, Bill has been the
O.A. basketball coach, following his best friend, the late Val
Muscato, who retired after 300 victories. Bill joined his friend as
a 300-game winner in 1990. Bill, who is retired as a social studies
teacher, remains active as a coach. Bill’s teams have won 11
Hockomock League Championships and have been Division II South
finalists three times. Between 1974-77, Nixon’s Tigers won 38
consecutive Hockomock League games. Since he became head coach,
Nixon’s Oliver Ames’ teams have never had a losing
season.
As a junior varsity coach, Bill’s teams won 222 games,
losing only 49. His J.V.’s won an Oliver Ames record 42
straight games. He coached O.A. football with Muscato and his
successors for 23 years before retiring in 1978. However, Bill
returned to coach football in 1988. Bill, who was Stonehill class
president in 1951-52, is the father of eight children and lives in
Easton with his wife, Helen.
