The first Stonehill College team into the Athletic Hall of Fame was the 1970-71 men’s basketball team on its 20th anniversary of being the first Stonehill team to make the NCAA New England Regionals.

Coach Jim Dougher and his Stonehill Chieftains became the first team at Stonehill to win 21 games while only losing 6 games. The Chieftains started off the season with a 0-2 record after losing to Holy Cross (98-76) and Assumption (93-64) and then reeled off a Stonehill-record 12 consecutive victories before having the streak halted by Bridgeport University (114-105 in overtime).

The team is the only one to defeat Fairfield University (110-106). The Chieftains finished the regular season with a record of 21-4 and qualified for the NCAA Small College Tournament before losing to Central Connecticut, 111-99, a team they had split with during the regular season. The Chieftains also dropped the consolation game of the tournament to Sacred Heart University, 86-81, to finish their season at 21-6.

The team was led by Stonehill’s all-time leading scorer and 1989 Hall of Fame inductee Michael Allocco (2,399 points) as well as 1,000-career point scorers Henry Jackson (1,090) and Rollie Hollins (1,021). Arthur Horan, Gerry Mooney, and John Monahan were the Chieftain tri-captains. Other members of the team included: Paul Miles, Ross Clark, Mark Severs, Paul Whitley, Jim Reynolds, Shawn O’Connell, Jim Mooney, Frank Labonia, Bob Moore, Howie Bain, and Bobby Normyle. The four managers were Joe Flewellyn, Dennis Flynn, Bob Casey, and Jason Potrykus.

The coaching staff was led by head coach Jim Dougher, who later assisted former Stonehill coach George Blaney at Holy Cross College. Dougher’s assistants were Stonehill HOF inductee Bob Hegarty and current Seton Hall Athletic Director Larry Keating.
