A long-time benefactor of Stonehill College, Edward F. Martin will hold a special place in the Stonehill College Athletic Hall of Fame. Edward is the brother of the late Speaker of the House, Joseph W. Martin., for whom the Martin Institute is named.

For several years, Edward has also been the generous sponsor of the Martin Award, an honor given annually to a male and female student-athlete who has excelled both academically and athletically.

Edward has led a long and distinguished life. During his school years, Edward excelled as an athlete at North Attleboro High School and Dartmouth College, where he was regarded as an outstanding third baseman for the baseball team. While at Dartmouth, Edward received an offer to play professional baseball for the New York Giants, but he declined.

Edward married Beatrice Hendrick, a native of Treadwell, New York, on October 16, 1926. He worked for many years with the Graybar Electric Company of New York.

But for 40 years, Edward had another career as an aide to his elder brother, the Republican congressman. He served as Jospeh's executive assistant for five Republican national conventions that the Speaker presided over.

Following his brother's career, Edward still remained politically active, including working on the 1964 and 1968 presidential campaigns.

Over the last three decades, Edward has been instrumental in helping Stonehill grow. He donated many of his brother's papers and memorabilia to the college. He helped secure the funding and land for the Martin Institute, and has been a constant supporter of Stonehill's efforts to grow into a first-class institution.
