Volleyball Fights Back for 3-2 Triumph Over Saint Rose

Skyhawks win six of last eight matches

ALBANY, N.Y. (November 3, 2017) – The Stonehill College volleyball team fought back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the College of Saint Rose, 3-2, Friday night at Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Skyhawks won with set scores of 21-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-22, and 16-14.

Stonehill (10-12, 7-4 NE10) saw Ashley Hitchcock (Warrenville, Illinois/Benet Academy), Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, New York/Smithtown West), and Allyson Hughes (Modesto, California/Big Valley Christian) with double-digit kills. Hitchcock tallied her eighth-career double-double with 15 kills, 16 digs, and five blocks. DeLanty matched her kills with 15 herself, and added 10 digs for her seventh double-double of her career and third-straight of the season. She also added in five blocks, while Megan Pennino (Wantagh, New York/Wantagh) recorded a match-high eight blocks, matching her career-high. Hughes chipped in 11 kills and four blocks of her own. Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard) registered a match-high 25 digs, as Jessica Givens (Albuquerque, New Mexico/St. Pius X) set the ball 51 times, three short of matching her career high.

Saint Rose (12-14, 3-8 NE10) saw Stevie Schwitzer record a match-high 20 kills, while Shayna Webber chipped in 14 kills. Madison Gerace tallied 10 digs, Tina Ceriello notched 21 digs, as Sam Kubik and Maddy Halverson registered 18 and 13 digs, respectively.

The Golden Knights started off the match with a .355 hitting percentage in the first set, the highest of the night, and kept the Skyhawks from taking the lead. Stonehill was able to tie the frame up twice, 13-13, but Saint Rose went on a 12-8 run to take the first set, 25-21.

Stonehill only saw a one-point lead in the second frame, 3-2, as Saint Rose once again took control of the set and running with a seven-point lead, 20-13. The Skyhawks came within three, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Knights took the second set, 25-21, as well.

The lead changed six times in the third set, as Saint Rose saw the longest run of the frame with seven-straight points, 18-12. Stonehill, however, was able to bounce back after a timeout to cut the deficit to three, 16-19, and rally until the end with a 9-4 run, taking set three with a 25-23 score.

The Skyhawks were able to open the fourth frame with a 6-2 run, but the Golden Knights fought back to tie the frame, 6-6. The score toggled back and forth in the rest of the set, but Stonehill was able to tie up the match with a 25-22 set score.

With Seven ties in the deciding frame, Stonehill knotted it up at 14-14 and tallied back-to-back points for match point, 16-14, with a final block by DeLanty, to win 3-2.

Stonehill competes in its final regular season match away from Merkert Gymnasium with a Conference contest against Le Moyne College on Saturday, November 4 at 11:00 a.m.
