Volleyball Grinds Out 3-0 Win Against Assumption

Givens and DeLanty each record four blocks in the victory


DeLanty tallies her 11th match this season with double-digit kills

WORCESTER, Mass. (October 24, 2017) – The Stonehill College volleyball team picked up its fourth win in five matches in a 3-0 victory over Assumption College on Tuesday night at Laska Gymnasium with set scores of 25-14, 25-14, and 25-22.

For Stonehill (8-11, 4-4 NE10) Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, New York/Smithtown West) led the match with 18 kills, a .455 hitting percentage, nine digs and four blocks. Freshman setter Jessica Givens (Albuquerque, New Mexico/St. Pius X) also notched four blocks, while adding in 38 assists. Seniors Ashley Hitchcock (Warrenville, Illinois/Benet Academy) and Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard) each recorded 13 and 17 digs, respectively.

Assumption (5-14, 3-7 NE10) saw Julia Goyette and Olivia Burke tally a team-high eight kills apiece. Brenna Chrisom notched 16 digs, while Burke and Waylin Walls Parker recorded three blocks each.

The Greyhounds held an early 8-7 lead in the first set, but the Skyhawks fought back and took control of the frame with an 18-6 run, finishing out the game, 25-14. Stonehill saw two big blocks by Megan Pennino (Wantagh, New York/Wantagh) and the duo of DeLanty and Givens rallying them to take a 1-0 lead in the game.

Stonehill's .364 hitting percentage in the second set was the best of the match, as Assumption only averaged a .059 hitting clip, in the heavily dominated Skyhawk set. Stonehill was able to take the second frame for a 2-0 advantage with a 25-14 set score.

The Greyhounds once again held an early lead, 12-8 in the second frame. The Skyhawks rallied with five-straight points, as Marykay Nasby's (Belle Plaine, Minnesota/Belle Plaine) served, giving them their second lead of the set, 13-12. Seven blocks for the Skyhawks in the third set was the match decider as the frame was tied up four times, 14-14, as Stonehill ran with an 11-8 rally to take match point, 25-22.

Stonehill hosts Southern Connecticut State University on Friday, October 27 at 7:00 p.m. at Merkert Gymnasium during the Skyhawks' Alumni Weekend.
