Maxey leads attack, but Skyhawks fall
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (October 16, 2010) – Stonehill College dropped a 3-0 decision (15-25, 21-25, 23-25) to Northeast-10 Conference opponent Adelphi University in women's volleyball action on Saturday.
Freshman Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) recorded a double-double for Stonehill with a team-high 10 kills and 17 digs, along with a solo block, and freshman Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover) added seven kills and hit .250, but the Skyhawks were overpowered in three sets against the Panthers. Senior Justine Thompson (Merrimack, N.H./Bishop Guertin) and sophomore Erin Kelly (Tinley Park, Ill./Marist) also put up double figures in digs for the Stonehill defense.
Adelphi senior Hilary Pavels (North Woodmere, N.Y./Valley Stream South) notched a game-high 12 kills and collected 18 digs, and senior Heather Mau (Honolulu, Hawaii/Maryknoll) anchored the defensive effort with 28 digs.
With the opening set tied 8-8 early, the Panthers won eight of the next nine points to open up a lead they would not relinquish on the way to a 25-15 victory. After Adelphi claimed another early lead in the second game, the Skyhawks fought back to a 21-21 tie behind a five-kill effort from Maxey, but dropped the final four points and the set before being edged out by a 25-23 score in the final game.
Stonehill (8-10, 6-3 NE-10) next visits Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
