Huselton leads offense but Skyhawks are swept
EASTON, Mass. (October 2, 2010) – The Stonehill College volleyball team lost a 3-0 decision (25-16, 25-20, 25-18) to the University of Bridgeport in a non-conference match on Saturday at home.
Stonehill was led on offense by junior Laura Huselton (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield), who with 10 kills was the only player to reach double figures for the Skyhawks. Senior Justine Thompson (Merrimack, N.H./Bishop Guertin) had a game-high 18 digs, and freshman Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) finished with 14.
The Bridgeport attack was paced by 15 kills from graduate student Ivana Kovacevic-Jurasin (Belgrade, Serbia/Faculty of Economics) and 10 from graduate student Agatha Baliddawa (Jinja, Uganda/LIU). Junior setter Tamara Leite (Natal, Brazil/Cloud County CC) distributed 33 assists on the day.
The Purple Knights made quick work of the first two sets, claiming a pair of wins by 25-16 and 25-20 scores. The Skyhawks battled back in the third set, opening up a 14-10 lead after three kills from Huselton, but Bridgeport went on an 8-0 run including two kills from Kovacevic-Jurasin and two blocks by junior Fernanda Costa (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Arizona Western College) to take the lead for good on the way to a 25-18 final score.
Stonehill (5-7, 3-0 NE-10) next visits UMass Lowell on October 6 at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks return for their next home match against Assumption on October 8 at 7 p.m.
