Warriors outscore Skyhawks 151-110, but Stonehill posts six event wins

ANDOVER, Mass. (October 21, 2023) – Stonehill College collected six event wins in a dual meet with Merrimack College at the Andover YMCA today. The Warriors finished the day outscoring the Skyhawks 151-110 to earn the dual meet victory.

Senior Sydney Stockwell swept the backstroke events for the second-straight meet to open the year for Stonehill. She finished first in the 100-yard back in 1:00.61 and 200-yard backstroke in 2:12.53. Sophomores Kristy Barry and Mazy Karuzis finished third and fourth in the 100-back, respectively, in 1:02.22 and 1:04.36, while postgrad Nika Sokolova placed fourth in the 200 in 2:18.25, while Karuzis was fifth in 2:23.46.

Barry also added a pair of wins, starting with a first-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:35.14, edging her teammate, junior Jami Hepburn, who took second in 2:36.12 as the duo were over four-seconds faster than the rest of the field. Barry also won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:15.93, while Stockwell finished third in 2:19.55 and Sokolova was fourth in 2:23.81.

Hepburn was also second in the 100-yard breaststroke to lead the Skyhawks in the event with a time of 1:11.90, while sophomore Taylor Belanger finished fourth in 1:15.25.

Freshman Grace Idowu earned a win as part of three top two finishes in her collegiate debut for Stonehill. She won the 100-yard freestyle in 55.44-seconds, to go with a second-place finish in the 200-yard free in 2:05.33 and 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.47.

Sophomore Azia Koser turned in a first-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle in 11:42.66 – nearly nine seconds faster than the five entries, that included senior Morgan Gangi with a time of 13:01.40. Koser also finished second in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:18.92 and fourth in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:41.19.

Stonehill's 200-yard medley relay team of Idowu, Belanger, Stockwell and Barry finished second in 1:53.0. Idowu swam the opening backstroke leg in 28.54-seconds, while Belanger swam the breaststroke in 32.10-seconds, before Stockwell completed the butterfly leg in 26.98-second and then Barry swam the freestyle anchor leg in 25.38-seconds.

  • Stonehill posted a third-place finish to lead two entries in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Karuzis, Hepburn, freshman Sherri Danforth and Belanger was third in 1:48.51.
  • Sokolova finished third in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:06.70, while junior Julie Mastroianni placed sixth in 2:11.62.
  • Senior Katie Keating placed fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:04.09.
  • Senior Maddie Conley placed fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:46.89.
  • Danforth and Mastroianni finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 100-yard freestyle in 59.96-seconds and 1:00.39.
