Holy Cross Holds Off Women's Lacrosse, 19-11

Zinsner and Kittredge score four goals apiece, Cini notches nine saves to lead Crusaders

WORCESTER, Mass. (February 24, 2023) – College of the Holy Cross answered a second half comeback effort from Stonehill College to secure a 19-11 victory in a non-conference women's lacrosse matchup at Kuzniewski Field this evening.

Highlights

  • Sophomores Sally Zinsner and Ella Kittredge each scored a team-high four goals for Holy Cross while Zinsner also dished an assist for a five-point game. Kittredge also totaled five draw controls and converted four of five free-position attempts for her scoring output.
  • Senior Jenna Giardina and junior Lauren Drillock each contributed four-point games, with Giardina posting three goals and an assist, while Drillock posted two goals and two assists, with nine draws and two caused turnovers.
  • Junior Tori Cini preserved the win for Holy Cross with five of her nine saves in the second half, including four in the third quarter.
  • Senior All-American Lydia Rudden totaled a season-high four points with two goals and two assists for Stonehill.
  • Senior Kayla Conway scored a team and season-high three goals for the Skyhawks, while junior Lilly Leach tallied two goals and an assist, with eight draw controls.
  • Freshman Grace Murphy chipped in with a season-high matching two goals, while sophomore Sarah Faley finished with six saves and three ground balls in the Stonehill goal.

    Holy Cross emerged from a tight first quarter with a three-goal lead (5-2) with five different scorers as Zinsner and senior Henna Brennan each registered a goal and assist for the Crusaders.
  • Brennan and Giardina scored twice within a minute span five minutes into the game for a two goal Holy Cross lead, but Murphy's first goal of the game cut the lead in half for Stonehill (2-1) just 20-seconds after Giardina's first tally.
  • Zinsner scored off a Brennan feed to restore a two-goal Holy Cross lead with 7:13 remaining in the opening quarter, but Conway's first, assisted by Rudden, again pulled the Skyhawks back within one (3-2) with 2:35 to go.
  • Holy Cross scored twice in the final minute of the frame to open a three-goal lead heading to the second, where Murphy's second of the game opened the scoring and pulled Stonehill back within two (5-3) 36-seconds in.
  • Holy Cross followed with a seven-goal run to open a nine-goal lead (12-3) after a free-position goal by senior Christine Fabrizi with 2:25 remaining in the half. Zinsner scored three goals during the run for the Crusaders.
  • All-American Emma Sullivan and Leach closed out the first half scoring in the final minute, and then Conway opened the third quarter scoring to draw Stonehill back within six (12-6) three minutes into the second half.
  • Stonehill wrapped a 4-1 spurt around the end of the third with goals from Conway and Leach and then two-straight in the fourth by Rudden to close back within four (15-11) with 9:13 still to play.
  • Holy Cross held firm and scored the final four goals of the contest, including a pair by Giardina, to seal the win.

Noteworthy

  • Rudden posted her first multi-goal game of the season.
  • Murphy tallied two goals for the second time in her young collegiate career, matching her season-high set in the Boston University opener.
  • Conway's season-best three goals is her second multi-goal game of the season.
  • Leach has multiple goals in all three games this season and ten in her career overall.
  • This evening marked the first meeting all-time between Stonehill and Holy Cross.
