Softball Drops a Pair to Southern New Hampshire, 5-2 and 14-4

MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 14, 2013) – The Stonehill College softball team dropped a pair of games to the Southern New Hampshire University Penmen in a Northeast-10 Conference double-header Saturday afternoon in Manchester, N.H.

Southern New Hampshire 5, Stonehill 2

Daly and Stanley homer to pilot Southern New Hampshire to a game one victory.

Sophomore Ali Maloof (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) picked up the victory for the Penmen in game one. Maloof went the distance, holding Stonehill to two runs (one earned) on ten hits and four walks. Maloof struck out 12 batters in the victory.

Freshman Megan Ruonavaara (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) was charged with the loss for Stonehill. Ruonavaara pitched five innings, yielding five runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out six. Freshman Nicole Mellor (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) relieved Ruonavaara and pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Mellor held SNHU to one hit and two walks while striking out one in the outing.

Stonehill jumped out to an early lead with one run in the first inning. With the bases loaded and two outs in the first, Ruonavaara forced a walk to score the first run of the game for Stonehill.

The Skyhawks added a run in the second to make it a 2-0 game. With one out, Courtney Marchand (Raymond, N.H./Timberlane Regional) forced a walk. Marchand advanced to second on a groundout before reaching third on a wild pitch and scoring on an error by the catcher.

The Penmen began to chip away at the lead in the third inning. With a runner on first and two outs, Tesia Stanasek (Blackstone, Mass./Blackstone Valley) hit an RBI-double to right center field, plating the Penmen's first run.

Southern New Hampshire added two more runs in the fourth to take the lead. After the Penmen loaded the bases, Nicole Newell (Abington, Mass./South Shore Regional) reached on an error to score two more runs, making it 3-2.

Southern New Hampshire scored two more runs on home runs by Kate Stanley (Kingston, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) and Cara Daly (Plainville, Mass./King Philip Regional). They also held the Skyhawks scoreless for the rest of the game to close out the victory.

Junior Dolores Mattice (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohansen) pitched a five-inning complete game to earn the game two victory for the Penmen. Mattice gave up four runs (three earned) on three hits and struck out five in the win.

Junior Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) was saddled with the loss for Stonehill in game two. McKillop gave up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits over 1.1 innings. Mellor pitched 2.2 innings of relief to close out the day for Stonehill. The freshman was tagged for seven runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks.

Southern New Hampshire got the scoring started in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. With two out and the bases empty, Stanley launched her second homer of the day to give SNHU a one-run advantage.

The Skyhawks responded in the second with a run of their own to tie the lead. McKillop stepped to the plate and tied the score when she hit a solo home run to left field.

The Penmen seized control in the bottom of the second, scoring eight runs in the frame. With two runs already in and the bases loaded, Stanasek hit a two-run single through the left side to give SNHU a four-run lead. The next batter, Stanley, made it 6-1 when she singled up the middle. Daly added an RBI later in the inning to make it 9-1 after two.

After the Penmen extended their lead to 11-1, the Skyhawks responded with three in the fourth. With runners on first and second, Joceleynne Morrell (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) hit an RBI double to center field. Angela Moskwa (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) followed with an RBI-groundout to score the Skyhawks' third run. Alison Sumski (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) finished off the scoring in the fourth when she hit a sacrifice fly to center field.

Southern New Hampshire would add runs in the bottom of the fourth before the game ended in the fifth.

Stonehill (19-20, 11-8 NE-10) returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Merrimack College for a NE-10 matchup beginning at 3:00 pm. Next up for Southern New Hampshire (18-8, 10-4 NE-10) is 3:00 pm meeting with Saint Anselm on Tuesday.
