Skyhawks Drop Double-Header to Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (March 24, 2013) – The Stonehill College softball team lost a pair of games to the Adelphi University Panthers in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup Sunday afternoon at Janet L. Ficke Field in Garden City, N.Y.

Sophomore Victoria Wink (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs to pace the Panthers. Junior Katie Andrews (Dothan, Al./Dothan) chipped in with three hits and an RBI of her own for Adelphi.

Senior Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) led the way for Stonehill. Eisenmann went 4-for-4 with four singles, an RBI, and a run scored. Freshman Megan Staudle (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall Central) and senior Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) also recorded RBIs in the loss.

Devon Kelly (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) was credited with the victory for Adelphi in game one. Kelly pitched a complete game, yielding five runs (three earned) on 11 hits and one walk. The senior struck out four batters in the win.

Freshman Lauren Esposito (Midlefield, Conn./Coginchaug) earned the game one loss for Stonehill. Esposito pitched 4.1 innings of relief, holding the Panthers to just three hits and one earned run. Megan Ruonavaara (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) started the game and went an inning and two-thirds, before being pulled in the second. Ruonavaara was tagged for five earned runs on nine hits and one walk.

Adelphi struck first in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. After Emily Dorko (Matamoras, Penn./Delaware Valley) singled and Heather Salerno (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) walked to lead off the inning, Wink launched a three-run home run to center field.

Stonehill responded in the top of the second with four runs of its own. With two outs and the bases loaded, Wilcox got the Skyhawks on the board when she singled to left field. Eisenmann followed with a single of her own, scoring two. Wilcox scored to make it 4-3 when Staudle reached on an error, making it 4-3 Skyhawks.

The Panthers regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning to make 5-4. With runners on runners on second and third, Wink drove in her fourth run of the game to tie the score. Meghan Heiser (Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis College Prep) then singled home another run to give the Panthers a one-run advantage.

The Skyhawks got a run in the top of the fourth to tie the game. With one out, Eisenmann reached base when she singled to left field. Staudle plated Eisenmann when she roped an RBI double to right ceter field.

Adelphi would post the game-winning run in the bottom of the fourth. With Wink on second, Andrews hit an RBI single to left field, driving in Wink for the sixth and final run of the game for Adelphi.

Jaclyn Bistock (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) went 2-for-4 with two singles, including the game-winning two-run single in the sixth to lead the way for Adelphi. Wink and Andrews also collected two-RBIs for the Panthers in game two.

Eisenmann had another big game for Stonehill, going 1-for-4 with a three-run home run. Ruonavaara added two hits and two runs for the Skyhawks, who fall to 2-2 in conference play after the loss.

Senior Laurin Watts (Gardendale, Ala./Tuscaloosa Academy) captured her tenth win of the season for Adelphi. Watts went the distance, giving up eight runs (five earned) on ten hits and four walks, while striking eight.

Eisenmann was saddled with the loss for the Skyhawks. The senior pitched 2.1 innings of relief and gave up five runs (zero earned) on five hits. Junior Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) got the start, going three and one-third innings and giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits.

The Panthers grabbed an early lead when they scored one run in the first inning. Dorko led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a groundout. Andrews put the Panthers ahead when she knocked in Dorko with an RBI-single to right center.

The Skyhawks took the lead in the second when they scored seven runs. After McKillop doubled and Ruonavaara singled, Jocelynne Morrell (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) hit an RBI-single to right center to put Stonehill on the board. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, Alison Sumski (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) reached on an error by the left fielder to score Morrell an Ruonavaara and give Stonehill a 3-1 lead. Two batters later with runners on first and third and the score 4-1, Eisenmann launched her fourth home run of the game to make it 7-1.

After Stonehill added a run in the top of the third, the Panthers began to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the inning. With a runner on first and one out, Wink registered her second home run of the day to cut the lead to 8-3.

Adelphi corralled two more runs in the fourth inning. After the Panthers scored on an error by the first baseman, Amy Caird (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) hit an RBI single to  center field, cutting the Skyhawk lead to three runs.

The Panthers took the lead for good during a five-run sixth inning. With runners on first and second and the score 8-6, Andrews knocked in Caird with an RBI single to make it a one-run game. Binstock then roped a two-run single to center to make it 9-8 Adelphi. The Panthers added an insurance run when Jeanine Leo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) drove home Binstock with an RBI double.

Stonehill was shut down in the seventh as Watts closed the door for Adelphi, striking out two in the inning.

Stonehill (8-12, 2-2 NE-10) returns to action on Wednesday afternoon for its home opener, a double-header against divisional opponent Bentley starting at 3:00 pm. Next up for Adelphi (15-6, 6-0 NE-10) is a double-header with Pace University, Wednesday at 3:00 pm.
