Stonehill Bounces Back to Earn Split at Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 26, 2011) – Stonehill College bounced back from a tough game one defeat to claim a split with Saint Anselm College in a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader at South Athletic Field this afternoon. Saint Anselm rallied for a 3-2 win in game one, before Stonehill bounced back for a 1-0 victory in the nightcap.

Junior Chelsea Stryker (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) paced the Stonehill offense as she hit a combined 3-for-6 on the afternoon. Sophomore Courtney Marchand (Raymond, N.H./Timberlane Regional) hit 2-for-5 with an RBI, while classmate Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) and senior Ashley Langlois (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) both delivered RBIs.

Freshman Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) tossed a four-hit shutout to key the Skyhawks game two win.

Senior Raylyn Glavin (Saugus, Mass./Saugus) paced Saint Anselm as she hit a combined 3-for-4 with a walk and RBI over the doubleheader. Classmate Liz Trafton (Berwick, Maine/Seacoast Christian School) went 2-for-6 with a double and run scored.

Saint Anselm 3, Stonehill 2

Saint Anselm scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk off with a 3-2 comeback win over Stonehill in game one.

Freshman Nicole Boucher (Woonsocket, R.I./Woonsocket) drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly to right that scored classmate Cara Crowley (Lynn, Mass./Lynn English) in the bottom of the seventh. Crowley followed up singles from Trafton and freshman Monique Gauthier (Canton, Conn./Canton) to load the bases with none out in the inning. Glavin drew a bases loaded walk to pull the Hawks within a run, before senior Kayla McEachern (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) added an RBI single to right that evened the contest.

Glavin finished 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk and RBI for Saint Anselm. Trafton and Gauthier both hit 1-for-3 with an RBI, while McEachern went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Sophomore Kelly DeSormier (Tiverton, R.I./Bishop Stang) earned the complete game win (2-3) in the circle for Saint Anselm, yielding two earned runs on seven hits over seven strong innings.

Courtney Marchand paced Stonehill by hitting 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Kelsey Wilcox went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Senior Katy Abarr (Richmond, R.I./The Prout School) batted 1-for-3 with a double and run scored, while Lindsay McKillop hit 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Freshman Nicole Schneider (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) took the loss (3-4) in relief for the Skyhawks, walking both batters she faced without retiring a batter in the seventh. Junior Kaitlin Andrews (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) didn't figure in the decision, yielding two earned runs on six hits and a walk with no strikeouts in six-plus innings.

Stonehill opened the scoring in the first when Abarr doubled with two out and scored on a single to left by Wilcox. The Skyhawks added an insurance run in the fourth as McKillop led off with a single, was sacrificed to second, and scored on a single to center by Marchand.

McKillop (4-5) notched her second shutout of the season, scattering the four hits over her seven innings with one strikeout. She also went 1-for-3 at the plate for Stonehill. Chelsea Stryker hit 3-for-3 for the Skyhawks, while Ashley Langlois went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Raylyn Glavine batted 1-for-2 for Saint Anselm, while Liz Trafton finished 1-for-3 with a double. Sophomore Shannon Dalton (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) took the loss (12-6) in the circle for the Hawks, surrendering just the one earned run on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

Neither team scored until Stonehill broke through in the top of the seventh. Kelsey Wilcox led off with a single and was lifted for a pinch runner. McKillop singled and she and Kellie Reardon (Burlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic) advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt. Langlois followed with an infield single to score Reardon with the lone run of the game.

McKillop was brilliant in posting her second shutout of the season, facing one over the minimum through the first four innings, allowing just one hit before Trafton doubled in the fifth. McKillop allowed a one out single in the seventh, but retired the next two batters to seal the win.

Stonehill (16-24, 12-12 NE-10) is right back in action on Thursday to host Adelphi University as part of senior day at 3 p.m. Saint Anselm (19-17, 11-11 NE-10) hosts American International College tomorrow at 3 p.m.
