FOXBORO, Mass. (February 19, 2011) – Stonehill College fell behind early and a third-period rally fell short as Franklin Pierce University handed the Skyhawks a 5-2 loss in Saturday’s Northeast-10 Conference men’s ice hockey matchup.

Sophomore Tyler Gordon (Franklin, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) scored both goals for the Skyhawks as Stonehill outshot Franklin Pierce 47-29, but the Ravens built an early lead to come away with the victory behind a hat trick from sophomore Adam Dallaire (Waltham, Mass.) and a tenacious effort in goal from freshman Dave O’Brien (Groton, Mass.) With the victory, the Ravens claim the two points from the season series, and the Skyhawks remain fifth in the conference standings heading into the final week of the regular season.

The Skyhawks challenged early and often in the first period, racking up 20 shots on goal and maintaining a fast tempo as they spent most of the period in the offensive zone, but O’Brien had all the answers early on, stopping all 20 to hold Stonehill scoreless. The Ravens opened scoring at 7:23, when Dallaire connected on Franklin Pierce’s first power play of the night. Junior Bill Sullivan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added another toward the end of the period when he broke away in the Stonehill zone with the Ravens on the penalty kill, and netted a close-range attempt from the right side to make it 2-0 after one.

Dallaire struck again early in the second period. With Franklin Pierce on a 5-on-3 power play, freshman Bryan Collela (Medfield, Mass.) tried to wrap a shot around the left post, and Dallaire knocked back the short rebound off senior goaltender Derek Chapdelaine (Granby, Mass./Springfield Cathedral). Minutes later, junior Pat Shortt (New Haven, Conn.) tacked on another after collecting the puck in the neutral zone and breaking away from the Stonehill defense.

Gordon took control at the start of the third period to knock in two power-play goals within the first five minutes and cut the Ravens’ advantage to 4-2. On Stonehill’s first possession, he stormed down the left side and fired home a shot from near the circle with help from senior Angelo Todesca (Westwood, Mass./Catholic Memorial) and junior Patrick Greene (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial). Freshman Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass./Canton) and sophomore Christopher Gorovitz (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) came in on the next power play shift to set Gordon up for a second goal from nearly the same spot at 4:43.

O’Brien regained his lights-out form after that, though, and Dallaire wrapped things up with his third of the night at 15:47 on a feed across the slot from senior Sean Woodring (Rogue River, Ore.)

Stonehill (5-16-1, 3-6-1 NE-10) will close out the regular season next Thursday at Saint Anselm College before the NE-10 postseason gets underway on February 26.
