Skyhawks lose grip on early lead as Penmen rally in third

MANCHESTER, N.H. (January 25, 2011) – The Stonehill College men’s ice hockey team was edged 3-2 in overtime at Southern New Hampshire University in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup Tuesday evening.
For the second time in the season series, Southern New Hampshire erased an early Stonehill lead to force overtime, scoring three unanswered goals to close out the victory. Senior Angelo Todesca (Westwood, Mass./Catholic Memorial) and sophomore Tyler Gordon (Franklin, Mass./Xavarian Brothers) scored in the opening minutes of the second period to give the Skyhawks a 2-0 lead, but the Penmen responded with goals from seniors Brandon Sheehan (Bedford, Mass.) and Neil Adams (Gardner, Mass.) and sophomore Chris Hickey (Gilford, N.H.), who put away the game-winner at 3:12 of the extra period. Junior goaltender Tyler Jackson (Little Silver, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) was dealt the loss in a 37-save effort.
Todesca, who led the Skyhawks with two points, netted his 10th goal of the season at 0:35 of the second period, and Gordon made it 2-0 five minutes later when he converted a power-play attempt from Todesca and freshman Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial). Sheehan came back with a goal at 17:41 to cut the lead in half, and freshman goaltender Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) totaled 36 saves on the night as he locked Stonehill out the rest of the way.
Adams evened the score at 2-2 with a one-timer past Jackson at 6:20 of the third period, and the Skyhawks were unable to rally as Holske made 13 saves over the final 20 minutes of regulation to send the game to extra time. Hickey ended it just over three minutes into overtime when he put home a rebound from an attempt by freshman Trevor Nelson (Exeter, N.H.).
Stonehill (3-11-1, 2-2-1 NE-10) will visit Franklin Pierce University on Saturday before returning to their home ice on Wednesday, February 2 to host Framingham State College at 7:40 p.m.
