Football Falls in Finale at New Haven, 27-17

Logan and Williams lead Chargers to share of first place

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (November 16, 2019) – The University of New Haven wrapped a 14-point swing around halftime to key a 27-17 victory over Stonehill College in the Northeast-10 Conference football finale for both at Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium this afternoon.

Postgrad Ju'an Williams and sophomore Shamar Logan both went over 100-yards to lead New Haven to the win and share of first place in the NE10's final standings. Logan had 122 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns, while Williams caught seven passes for 129 yards and a score as he added 73 yards on kick returns to finish with 202 all-purpose yards. Junior Christian Lupoli posted 279 total yards on the day, completing 15-of-20 passes for 240 yards and the one touchdown pass to Williams, while adding another 39 yards on nine carries.

Postgrad Zach Cofrancesco and junior Allah Sessions each totaled a team-high eight tackles for New Haven, with Sessions posting five solo tackles, and Cofrancesco had four. Junior Martin Worgan added seven stops (six solo) and a pass breakup, while senior Austin Cascio was one of three Chargers with an interception today, returning his for 26 yards, to go with five tackles (four solo).

Stonehill also featured a pair of 100-yard gainers, with senior Andrew Jamiel capping his record-breaking career with 241 all-purpose yards, posting double-digit receptions for the 14th time and 100-plus receiving yards for the 16th time in his 39 career games. He finished the afternoon with ten receptions, including the 300th of his career, for 136 yards. Jamiel is just the second receiver in NE10 history to surpass 300 receptions, finishing his career with a program-record 309 catches for a record 3,646 yards and record 30 receiving touchdowns – a total that finishes second in program history for total touchdowns. He also finished the day with 1,063 receiving yards for the year, posting just the fourth 1,000-yard receiving season in program history with his career-high total finishing second all-time.

Sophomore running back Justin Felder posted his seventh 100-yard game of the year, registering 164 yards on 27 carries with two touchdowns. He caps his breakout season with a program-record 1,513 yards on a record 236 carries, also setting new program single-season marks with 16 rushing and 18 total touchdowns as he posts the first 100-point season in school history with 108.

Junior quarterback Anton Stoneking completed 21-of-35 passes for 228 yards. Sophomore DeAaron Lawrence chipped in with five receptions for 58 yards for the Skyhawks.

Junior Sam Athy posted the third double-digit tackle game of the season to lead the Stonehill defense with 12 (four solo), including 1.5 tackles for a loss of three yards, and his second fumble recovery of the year. Senior Michael Lewis added 11 stops (six solo), including 0.5 for a loss of two, while junior Nate Bresson registered seven tackles (three solo), including 2.5 for a loss of 13, and 1.0 sacks for a loss of ten.

New Haven sandwiched touchdowns around halftime to turn a four point deficit (10-6) after Felder's first touchdown of the day with 4:53 remaining in the second quarter into a ten point lead (20-10) after Logan took the handoff on the opening play of the second half and raced 75 yards for a score. Williams nosed the Chargers back in front with a 13-yard touchdown catch from Lupoli with 35-seconds remaining to cap a 12 play, 63-yard drive following Felder's first score. Those were the first touchdowns of the game after the teams alternated field goals over the first 22 minutes of the game, with New Haven junior Michael Stalenyj converting from 22 and 27 yards around a 24-yard field goal from Stonehill senior Matt Haite.

Haite also sees his record-breaking career come to a close for Stonehill with his five points this afternoon. The program's all-time leading scorer with 244 points in 41 career games, has also set career records for PATs (118) and field goals (42), adding a school-record 13 field goals this season and finishing second on the program's single-season list with his 36 extra points this year.

Stonehill pulled back within a field goal with 4:49 left in the third as Felder scored his second touchdown of the game from six yards out at the end of an eight play, 76-yard drive. The Skyhawks drove to the New Haven ten on its next possession early in the fourth, with Stoneking hitting Jamiel for 24 yards, Lawrence for 17 and senior tight end Casey Gervais for 14. He followed with a key 18-yard pass to Jamiel on third and 20 to the ten-yard line, setting up fourth and two, and the Skyhawks opted to go for it, but came up short and turned the ball over on downs.

New Haven responded with a 14 play, 90-yard touchdown drive in the other direction, capped by a two-yard Logan touchdown that not only restored the ten-point lead, but also ate 7:48 off the clock. Cascio intercepted Stoneking on the second play of the ensuing Stonehill possession and then the Skyhawks were able to drive into New Haven territory late, but a 31-yard field goal with 22-seconds to play was off the mark to close out the comeback hopes.      

New Haven (7-3, 6-2 NE10) finishes in a tie for first place in the NE10 standings with the win, while Stonehill finishes at 6-4 overall, including 5-3 in the NE10 to finish in a three-way tie for third place in the Conference standings.
