Gaines Named NE-10 Freshman of the Week

Lumberton, N.J., native honored after leading Skyhawks defense in win

EASTON, Mass. (October 12, 2009) - Stonehill College defensive back Jareed Gaines (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) was named the Northeast-10 Conference's Freshman of the Week for football by the league office this afternoon.

Gaines earns the award for the first time after leading Stonehill with a season-high 13 tackles (seven solo) and his first career sack for a loss of six yards in Saturday's 34-14 win over Pace University at W.B. Mason Stadium. Gaines was a key figure in a Skyhawks defense that held Pace to 14 points and just 62 yards rushing.

Gaines has appeared in all six games in his first collegiate season for Stonehill. He has totaled 20 tackles (nine solo), with his previous best before Saturday coming with three assisted stops in the Skyhawks week two win at NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Wagner College on Staten Island. Gaines made his first collegiate start for Stonehill against Pace and has been a figure on special teams this season as well.

Stonehill (2-4, 1-3 NE-10) is back in action next Saturday when it visits Southern Connecticut State University, preseason favorites in the Northeast-10, at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks are back home the following Saturday, October 24, to host Saint Anselm College on Alumni Weekend at 1 p.m. Pace (0-6, 0-4 NE-10) hosts Bentley University next Saturday for homecoming at 1 p.m.
