EASTON, Mass. (September 8, 2009) - Stonehill College's Departments of Student Activities and Athletics are pleased to announce its plans for "Kickoff Weekend" centered around two intercollegiate athletic events Thursday and Friday.

"Kickoff Weekend" will get underway on Thursday night when Stonehill's No. 4-ranked field hockey team hosts 3rd-ranked University of Massachusetts Lowell for a non-conference game at W.B. Mason Stadium at 7 p.m. Stonehill (2-2, 0-0 NE-10) are winners of two-straight, including a 4-1 victory at previous No. 5-ranked Bentley University last week, while UMass Lowell are off to a 4-0 start to their season. The River Hawks are preseason favorites in the Northeast-10, just two points ahead of the Skyhawks, who were selected third, in the poll voting.

Following the game will be a pep rally for Friday night's football game with head football coach Rob Talley as the featured speaker. Once the pep rally is over, members of the football team will serve as coaches for a "powder-puff" flag football game at the Stadium.

On Friday, the Stonehill football team opens its home and Northeast-10 schedule against defending Conference champions American International College at W.B. Mason Stadium at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks are off to a 1-1 start to the season after Saturday's 45-42 triumph at NCAA FCS member Wagner College, while the Yellow Jackets are 2-0 after Saturday night's 58-34 non-conference win at Merrimack College.

Prior to the game, will be a New England Tailgate Party available to all Stonehill students for $9.50 to gain access to a buffet of New England clam chowder, chili, chicken wings and more. There will be a celebrity dunk tank, featuring some familiar faces from the campus community, with all proceeds to benefit the Stonehill Student Athlete Advisory Committee's "Make-a-Wish" campaign. The Massachusetts Army National Guard Stars and Stripes Humvee will be at the Stadium for pictures and Monster Energy Drink will be on hand with free samples of its products.

With an eye towards recognizing 9/11, Stonehill has several events of note planned before kickoff and at halftime of the football game. The Stonehill Army ROTC cadets will present the nation's colors in the form of a 20'x38' flag, donated by Rockland Cement Block and Flag Co., at midfield for the singing of the National Anthem. The family of former Stonehill football player Timothy J. Coughlin, ‘80, for whom the field at W.B. Mason Stadium is named and a 9/11 victim, along with Stonehill President Rev. Mark T. Cregan will participate in the opening coin toss. At halftime, Stonehill will recognize all its alumni who were victims of 9/11.

Student Activities will also be holding a carnival in parking lot 9, behind the MacPhaidin Library, starting at 9 p.m.
