PREVIEW: Equestrian Sending Four to IHSA Zone 1, Region 4 Championships

EASTON, Mass. (March 28, 2024) – Four members of the Stonehill College equestrian program have qualified for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 1, Region 4 Championships that will be held on Saturday at Holly Hill Show Stables in Hanover, Massachusetts, starting at 9 a.m.

Stonehill co-captains, senior Lindsey Simmons and junior Emma Worster as well senior Sarah Herring and junior Madeline Ahern, both national qualifiers from a season ago, will be representing the program this weekend at the regional competition. The Skyhawks captured their 11th IHSA Zone 1, Region 4 Championship this season and will compete as a team at the Zone 1 Championships, hosted by Mount Holyoke College on Saturday, April 6.

Ahern will compete in both the open fences and flat events after qualifying at the Bridgewater State Show on March 3 and Brandeis College Show on March 16. She will also be the region's Cacchione Cup representative which will be announced at this weekend's regional championship. The National Championship qualifier from a season ago was highlighted this year by five total blue ribbons, including finishing as the high-point rider at the Brandeis Show and reserve high-point rider at Boston College.

Herring will compete in both the open fences and flat equitation after qualifying for regional competition at the Brandeis College Show, the squad's final competition of the regular season. A national qualifier from a season ago in intermediate flat, she finished just behind Ahern in the Cacchione Cup standings. Herring is tied for the team-lead with five blue ribbons this season.

Simmons has qualified for this weekend's regional championship in the limited flat event after qualifying at the Boston College Show on November 5. She has had a strong senior season of riding, tallying three first place finishes which included a reserve high point rider at the Stonehill home show at Mor Linn Farm in Walpole on October 28.

The final Skyhawk to qualify for her first regional performance is Worster, who qualified in both intermediate fences and flats. This season, the junior co-captain took home two blue ribbons and qualified for regional competition at the lone shows of the spring season for Stonehill at Bridgewater State and Brandeis College.

The top two riders from each of the events at this weekend's regional championship will advance to the IHSA Zone 1 Championships at Mount Holyoke next weekend. The Skyhawks have already qualified for the team portion of the Zone 1 championships and Ahern will also compete in the Cacchione Cup. The IHSA National Championships will be held at Tryon International in Mill Spring, North Carolina, May 2-5.
