Veit Named NE-10 Freshman of the Week

Easthampton, Mass., native selected after strong showing at NE Championships

EASTON, Mass. (October 13, 2009) - Stonehill College's Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference's Freshman of the Week in women's cross country it was announced by the League office today.

Veit earns the honor for the first time after she led Stonehill to a 23rd-place finish at the New England Championships at Franklin Park in Boston on Saturday with a 92nd place finish overall out of 327 individual competitors. She completed the 5-kilometer course in 19:21 to place third among Northeast-10 and Division II runners at the event as the first freshman from the Conference to cross the finish line. The Skyhawks finished second among NE-10 and Division II teams at the event.

Veit has competed in four of Stonehill's five events in her first collegiate season. She recorded a season-best time of 18:47 over 5K to finish 16th overall at the UMass Dartmouth Shriners' Invitational on September 19 to help the Skyhawks place fourth out of 42 teams at the event. Veit also helped Stonehill to a fourth place finish at the Pre-National Invitational hosted by the University of Southern Indiana with a 19th-place finish in 23:35.22 over 6K on September 26.

Stonehill, ranked 22nd in the most recent U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II national poll and first in the organization's East Regional rankings for the eighth-straight week, is off this coming weekend before returning to action on Sunday, October 25, when it competes in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships, hosted by Saint Michael's College in Colchester, Vt.
