American International Holds Off Women’s Volleyball, 3-2

DeLanty tallies her first collegiate double-double

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 23, 2016) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team dropped its opening Northeast-10 Conference match to American International College, 3-2 Friday night in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Skyhawks fell with set scores of 25-21, 21-25, 25-23, 14-25, 11-15.

Stonehill's (5-5, 0-1 NE-10) junior Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) recorded a team-high 13 kills and posted her first-career double-double of the season with 10 digs, while junior Marykay Nasby (Belle Plain, Minn./Belle Plain) and sophomore Allyson Hughes (Modesto, Calif./Big Valley Christian) each chipped in nine kills apiece.

American International (13-2, 1-0 NE-10) had two student-athletes with a double-double and one with double-digit kills. Jana Potic and Annie Boele each registered 10 kills and 12 digs. Diva Rivas was the other Yellow Jacket to finish the five-set conference win with 16 kills, a match-high.  

Stonehill came out with a smooth start to the first set, breaking open the frame, 14-9, before American International was able to close the gap to six, 17-21. The Skyhawks did not give up as they matched the Yellow Jackets after each point, but Stonehill took the first frame 25-21. 

The Skyhawks took charge of the second set holding the lead until the set was knotted at 21, as the Yellow Jackets were able to make a run for set point with four-straight scores, 25-21.

Once more, Stonehill held the lead in the third set. The Yellow Jackets would close in on the Skyhawks by one point, 10-11, but three kills by DeLanty and a service ace by Nasby put American International down five, 15-10. American International responded with its own four-point rally, but Stonehill was able to quickly climb its lead back up to three, 17-14. The Yellow Jackets would not see the lead for the rest of the set as the Skyhawks closed the frame with DeLanty's 12th kill of the match, 25-23.

American International saw its highest hitting percentage, .289, in the fourth set as it took control of the frame with back-to-back runs giving it a seven-point advantage, 16-9. The Skyhawks came within four, 13-17, but were unable to hold on as the Yellow Jackets' 8-1 last minute run tied the match at two a piece, 25-14.

Stonehill fell behind early in the deciding set, 6-9, off of a five-point American International run. The Skyhawks came within two, 7-9 ut the Yellow Jackets closed the match on a 6-2 run to take match point, 15-11.

Stonehill hosts Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday, September 27 at 7 p.m. for its Purple and White Match.
