Sophomore Joe Santo finishes 156th in personal best time of 26:13.02 to lead Skyhawks
BOSTON, Mass. (October 11, 2014) – The Stonehill College men's cross country team, ranked No. 23 in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II poll and ranked second in the East Region, finished 28th overall among 39 teams competing today at the New England Championships, held at Franklin Park in Dorchester, Massachusetts.
Sophomore Joe Santo (Newburyport, Massachusetts/Newburyport) led the way for the Skyhawks, finishing 156th overall with a personal best time of 26:13.02 on the eight-kilometer course. Santo topped his previous best mark of 26:34 set at last year's New England Championship sub-varsity race.
Running for the first time this season, senior Paul Cina (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) was the second Skyhawk to cross the finish line, doing so in 26:16.48, good for 162nd overall.

Less than four seconds separated Cina from freshman Dillon McGee (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy), who placed 164th with a time of 26:20.29. McGee has posted the fastest time among Stonehill freshmen in all four meets this fall, including a fifth-place effort at the season-opening Shacklette Invitational.
Sophomore Antonio Xelhua (Arlington, Massachusetts/Arlington) finished 168th and earned a mark of 26:24.87, while classmate Adam Rego (Rumford, Rhode Island/La Salle Academy) placed 180th in 26:42.81.
Freshman Alex Southiere (Cumberland, Rhode Island/Cumberland) and junior Nick Kirkpatrick (Carmel, Indiana/Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) finished 226th and 242nd, respectively, with times of 27:33.13 and 28:21.60.
Providence College and Brown University tied for the team title with 72 total points, as each school placed a pair of runners inside the top-10. The University of New Hampshire finished in third place (148 points), followed by Dartmouth College (160 points) and Boston University (182 points). Stonehill's 830 points were good for 28th place, just ahead of Lyndon State College (836 points). Junior Mike Biwott of American International College captured the individual title, as he placed first in 24:10.75.
Stonehill will be back in action next weekend at the Gates Farm Northeast-10 Preview Meet, hosted by Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, New Hampshire.
