Stonehill Finishes Second At Shacklette Invitational

MANCHESTER, N.H. (September 6, 2014) – The Stonehill College men's cross country team, receiving votes in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II poll, and ranked third in the East Region, finished second among nine teams competing today at the Shacklette Invitational on the campus of Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Senior Michael Gendron (Lowell, Massachusetts/Lowell) led the way for the Skyhawks, placing third overall with a time of 27:16.6. Assumption College senior Anthony Fierimonte won the race, placing first among 99 participants in 26:52.8, while Merrimack College senior Luis Cruz finished second and clocked in at 27:10.9.

Running in his first collegiate meet, Stonehill freshman Dillon McGee (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) posted a top-five finish, as his time of 27:31.9 was good for fifth place overall. Senior Seamus McEvoy (Longmeadow, Massachusetts/Longmeadow) was the third Skyhawk to finish in the top-10 with his ninth-place effort in 27:48.8.

Merrimack won the team title with 38 total points, followed by Stonehill (50 points), the University of New England (83 points), Assumption (106 points), and Bentley University (115 points).

Stonehill's next two runners to finish were both newcomers to the cross country program, sophomore Antonio Xelhua (Arlington, Massachusetts/Arlington) and freshman Alex Southiere (Cumberland, Rhode Island/Cumberland). Xelhua placed 16th with a time of 28:23.2, followed by Southiere, who came in behind Xelhua in 17th with a 28:24.3 mark. Sophomore Adam Rego (Rumford, Rhode Island/La Salle Academy) also posted a top-20 effort, as he crossed the finish line 19th and clocked in at 28:32.8.

Rounding out Stonehill's participants today was freshman Kenny Vinacco (Scituate, Rhode Island/Scituate), who placed 36th in his first collegiate competition, earning a time of 29:25.1.

The Skyhawks will be back in action next Saturday at the Division II/Division III Challenge, hosted by Kutztown University in Kutztown, Pennsylvania.
