#13 Stonehill Places Second at UMD Shiners' Cross Country Invitational

Gill and Fullerton lead Skyhawks with 17th-place finishes in 37 team event

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. (September 19, 2009) - The Stonehill College men's cross country team, ranked 13th in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II poll, placed second out of 37 teams at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Shiners' Invitational today.

Stonehill posted a 96 team score after placing four runners in the top 20 and five in the top 25. Keene State College won the event with a 68 team score, while the University of Southern Maine was third (107). The Skyhawks were first of seven Division II programs at the invitational.

Juniors Kevin Gill (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) and Pat Fullerton (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) led Stonehill as they both crossed the finish line of the five-mile course in 25:26 for a 17th-place finish (out of 262 runners). American International freshman Glarius Rop (Eldoret, Kenya) won the event with a course-record time of 24:05.

Junior co-captain Daniel Pilz (Newington, Conn./Newington) and sophomore Stephen Polito (Worcester, Mass./Doherty Memorial) both crossed the finish line a second behind their teammates in 25:27 for 20th place. Junior Benjamin Rumery (Dayton, Maine/Thornton Academy) was a second behind those in 23rd place at 25:28 to round out the Skyhawks scoring runners.

Stonehill is back in action next Saturday, September 26, when it participates in the University of Southern Indiana Pre-National Invitational at the site of the 2009 NCAA Division II Championships in November in Evansville, Ind.
