Penney Named NE-10 Freshman of the Week

Haverhill, Mass., native honored after helping Stonehill win USI Pre-National

EASTON, Mass. (September 29, 2009) - Stonehill College's Ethan Penney (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) was selected as the Northeast-10's Freshman of the Week by the Conference office this afternoon.

Penney, who earns Freshman of the Week honors for the first time, was selected after helping Stonehill to the team title at the University of Southern Indiana Pre-National Invitational this past weekend. He placed 21st overall (out of 99 runners) as he completed the 8-kilometer course that will host the NCAA Division II Championships in November with a time of 26:46.33. He was the fourth-fastest freshman entry overall in the event which featured four nationally-ranked programs.

Saturday marked the third collegiate event for Penney in his freshman season. He finished 11th overall at the season-opening Bryant University Invitational on September 4, completing the 5K run in 17:02.81. Penney placed second in the sub-varsity race of the UMass Dartmouth Shriner's Invitational on September 19 with a time of 25:45 over 8K.

Stonehill, ranked 12th in the most recent U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II poll, took its second team title of the season on Saturday, defeating 9th-ranked Southern Indiana (2nd), #24 Harding University (3rd) and #5 Abilene Christian University (4th). The Skyhawks placed four runners in the top ten, had all five scoring runners in the top 13 and put all seven of their competitors in the top 25.

Stonehill is back in action on Saturday, October 10, for the New England Championships at Franklin Park in Dorchester, Mass.
