White key in two wins over regionally ranked opponents for Skyhawks

FLUSHING, N.Y. (March 1, 2020) – Saint Thomas Aquinas College, ranked No. 5 in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Region rankings, posted a 5-2 victory over Stonehill College in non-conference men's tennis action at the Queens (N.Y.) College Tennis Center this afternoon. 

How it Happened

  • Senior Enej Hasicevic led St. Thomas Aquinas as a double-winner in the match. He teamed up with junior Alvaro Barranco to clinch the doubles point for the Spartans with their 6-1 win at No. 2. Hasicevic followed up with a 6-3, 6-2 decision at No. 6 singles against Stonehill junior Joey Conrod.
  • Sophomore Odysseas Papaioannou, ranked No. 4 in the Oracle/ITA East Region singles rankings, battled from a set down against Stonehill freshman Christian Duffy for a win. Duffy breezed to the first set, 6-1, but Papaioannou responded by taking the second set 7-5, before clinched the match 6-1 in the third.
  • Junior Paul Voigt and freshman Tony Khamassi also picked up singles wins for STAC.
  • Senior Samuel Miller and junior Russell White were both double-winners for Stonehill. The duo combined to defeat Papaioannou and junior Roberto Chong, the fourth-ranked doubles pairing in the East Region, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.
  • White added another win over a regionally-ranked opponent, Chong, ranked No. 11 in the East Region singles rankings, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
  • Miller rallied from a set down to knock off Barranco, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.

Stonehill (5-2, 0-0 NE10) returns to the courts next Monday, March 9, when it opens its spring break schedule against Dallas Baptist University in Orlando, Florida. The Skyhawks next home match is its Northeast-10 Conference opener against Assumption College on Sunday, March 22, at 1 p.m. Queens (4-1, 0-0 ECC) hosts Wagner University on Monday at 1 p.m.
