Rashad leads five double-winners for the regionally-ranked Knights

FLUSHING, N.Y. (February 29, 2020) – Queens (N.Y.) College, ranked No. 3 in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, dealt Stonehill College its first loss of the season with a 7-0 victory in non-conference men's tennis action inside the QU Tennis Center this evening. 

How it Happened

  • Sophomore Kareem Rashad, ranked No. 10 in the Oracle/ITA East Region singles rankings, led five double-winners for Queens. He combined with classmate Moritz Borges for a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles to lead a sweep of the three doubles matches for the Knights. Rashad followed that up with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles against Stonehill freshman Christian Duffy.
  • Borges, ranked No. 15 in the region, added a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles against Stonehill senior Aaron Diamond.
  • Junior Hugo Evangelista de Andrade notched the match-clinching point for Queens, with his 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles against Stonehill senior Manu Ravichandrakumar.
  • Freshman Ben Simmons battled in two tight matches for Stonehill. He and junior Joey Conrod forced a tiebreak at No. 3 doubles, before falling 7-1. Simmons also went into a third set super tiebreak at No. 6 singles against Queens sophomore Julius Schulte, falling 11-9 in the tiebreak after winning the second set 6-4.

Stonehill (5-1, 0-0 NE10) is right back in action tomorrow at Queens, when it faces Saint Thomas Aquinas College, ranked No. 5 in the region, at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks next home match is its Northeast-10 Conference opener against Assumption College on Sunday, March 22, at 1 p.m. Queens (4-1, 0-0 ECC) hosts Wagner University on Monday at 1 p.m.
