How it Happened

  • Moreton moved into fourth place on the program's career scoring list with his 24 points tonight (PHOTO BY Lewis Glass/SportsPix)
New Haven outlasted Stonehill in triple overtime, scoring the first four points of the third extra session with baskets from Rowland and Felizor over the first 2:17 and then weathered a Moreton three-pointer that drew the Skyhawks back within a point.
  • Stonehill came up empty on its last three shots as New Haven hung on to advance to the final.
  • Lane appeared to win the game for New Haven in double-overtime when he buried a second-chance three-pointer from the corner for a two-point lead (97-95) with 0.5-seconds remaining.
  • Stonehill would improbably force a third overtime, scoring from the length of the court with a half second left. The Skyhawks managed to improve its court position when senior Michael Boen's full court pass was tipped out of bounds in front of the home bench with 0.2-seconds still on the clock. Twitty then lobbed an inbounds pass to the far side of the rim to a cutting Sims who tipped the ball in with his left hand to knot the game for the 18th time on the night.
  • In a game that included 17 lead changes to go with the 18 ties, Stonehill held the largest lead of the night by either team with a seven-point advantage (65-58) after a jumper by sophomore Josh Mack with 7:10 left in the second half.
  • New Haven used a 10-4 run over the next four minutes to pull within one (69-68) with 3:47 left in regulation, keyed by a Bailey three-pointer and Felizor three-point play.
  • Twitty rattled in a three-pointer with 63-seconds to play to stretch the Stonehill lead to four again (75-71), but New Haven rallied with a Lane jumper with 34-seconds left and then a Thomas jumper with five seconds remaining to knot the score (75-75).
  • New Haven got a shot to win the game in regulation off a Stonehill turnover, but Rowland's jumper missed the mark.
  • Chose gave Stonehill a three-point lead in the first overtime, but Lane scored a layup off a turnover with 19-seconds remaining to draw New Haven even again (82-82).
  • New Haven again had a chance to avoid another overtime as Lane stole an errant Stonehill pass and was fouled but missed both free-throws with 12-seconds remaining and the Skyhawks couldn't get a shot, sending the game to double-overtime.
  • The two teams combined to score 30 points in the second overtime that concluded in dramatic fashion.
  • New Haven, whose largest lead was five points (42-37) after Lane opened the second half with a basket, led by three (40-37) at the half after an opening 20 minutes in which both teams shot lights out. The Chargers connected at 73.9% (17-23), including 4-for-5 from three (80%), and Stonehill hit at 59.3% (16-27), including 3-of-5 (60%) three-pointers.
  • Stonehill answered Lane's layup to start the second half with nine straight points, the final six from Moreton after Chose sparked the run with a three-pointer, to take a four-point lead (46-42) five minutes into the frame.

  • Chose moves within 18 points of becoming Stonehill's 42nd 1,000-point scorer with his career-high matching 28 points tonight. He has now scored 982 points in 81 games. His six three-pointers tonight give him 186 for his career to move into sole possession of seventh place on the Skyhawks all-time list.
