Trevisan and Walck combine for 42 points to lead Griffins to win 

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (December 20, 2013) – Chestnut Hill College took advantage of 18 Stonehill College turnovers on its way to a 72-66 decision in non-conference men's basketball action at Sorgenti Arena this afternoon.

Chestnut Hill outscored Stonehill 21-11 in points off turnovers and outscored the Skyhawks 27-10 at the free-throw line, going to the stripe 32 times (converting 84.4%) compared to 14 trips to the line by the Skyhawks (71.4%). The Griffins were held to 39.2-percent (20-for-51) shooting from the field, including 5-for-16 (31.3%) from three-point range, compared to 48% (24-50) shooting from Stonehill, including 8-for-21 (38.1%) from long distance. The Skyhawks posted a 10-2 advantage for second chance points despite CHC holding a 31-30 rebounding edge.

Postgrad Taylor Trevisan (West Chester, Pa./Salesianum) led Chestnut Hill with a game-high 23 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field, while converting 10-of-11 free-throw attempts to go with four steals. Junior Christian Walck (Lancaster, Pa./Saint Thomas More) added 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 6-for-6 from the line, five rebounds and three steals, while classmate Filip Sekulic (Danilovgrad, Montenegro) notched a double-double with 11 points and a game-high ten rebounds off the bench with three assists and two blocked shots.

Freshman Ryan Logan (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) paced Stonehill with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 2-for-3 from three-point range, converting 3-of-4 free-throws with a team-high seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Sophomore Carter Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) scored a team and career-high 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 4-for-6 from three-point range, converting both free throw attempts to go with a team-best seven rebounds and three assists, but was hampered by eight turnovers. Junior Jack Cole (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) rounded out the Skyhawks double-figure scorers with ten points on 4-of-7 shooting, and five rebounds.

Chestnut Hill pulled out the win after a 33-33 halftime deadlock despite shooting just 34.8% (8-for-23) from the field in the second half, including 2-for-7 (28.6%) from long distance. The Griffins outscored Stonehill 21-3 from the free-throw line over the final 20 minutes and held a 10-2 advantage in points off turnovers.

Chestnut Hill pulled out to a four point lead (42-38) after a Trevisan layup 4:15 into the second half. Stonehill scored seven straight points to turn a three point deficit into a four point lead (50-46) on a Cole layup with 10:05 to play. Trailing by two (54-52) with 8:37 remaining, Chestnut Hill held Stonehill scoreless for five minutes to open a nine point lead (63-54) after an 11-0 run capped by a pair of free-throws by Sekulic with 3:29 on the clock. Walck put the Griffins in front for good with a three-pointer to spark the run.

Stonehill drew back within four twice over the next two minutes, including 65-61 with a Cole layup with 1:45 remaining, but would get no closer. Trevisan sealed the win by converting 8-of-8 free-throws from there.

Stonehill jumped out to a nine point lead (15-6) six minutes into the game on eight straight points by sophomore Pierce Cumpstone (Bainbridge Township, Ohio/Kenston), including a pair of triples. Chestnut Hill answered with a 14-2 run to take a three point lead (20-17) with a three-pointer by freshman Billy Cassidy (Primos, Pa./Friends' Central) with 9:39 left in the half. The Skyhawks regained a four point lead (25-21) after a three-point play by sophomore Daniel Brix (Monroe Township, N.J./St. Joseph) with 5:11 to play in the frame. Stonehill's lead was still four (33-29) after a tip-in by Logan with 1:17 left in the half before the Griffins scored the final four points of the frame in the closing 12-seconds to force the halftime draw.

Stonehill (3-7, 1-5 NE-10) is off until after the New Year when it returns to Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday, January 4, at Saint Michael's College at 3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks don't return to Merkert Gym until Saturday, January 11, when they host Pace University at 3:30 p.m. Chestnut Hill (3-8, 1-3 CACC) hosts Holy Family University on Thursday, January 2, at 8 p.m.
