Women’s Cross Country Finishes Fifth At New England Championships

Cyr led Skyhawks with 24th place finish


Erhard was the second Skyhawk across the finish line, placing 28th out of 168 competitors 

BOSTON, Massachusetts (October 6, 2018) – The Stonehill College women's cross country team, ranked No. 1 in the East Region and No. 24 in the nation in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Preseason Poll, finished fifth overall at the New England Championships Saturday morning at Franklin Park.

Division I competitor Boston College totaled 27 points for its second-straight New England Championship in the varsity race, while MIT was the runner up, combining for 78 points. Quinnipiac University placed third out of 24 teams with 122 points, while the University of New Hampshire collected 127 points, good for fourth, and Stonehill was the first Northeast-10 Conference team with 159 points, good for fifth place.

Senior Makenzie Cyr led the Skyhawks to its best mark since 2015 when the team placed fourth, with her best mark at the Championships finishing 24th out of 168 competitors clocking in a time of 18:48.7.

Rebecca Erhard was the sixth freshman across the line as she crossed the finish line with a time of 18:56.8, good for 28th in the five-kilometer race. Sophomore Sam Curtin  was the next Skyhawk across the finish clocking in four seconds after her teammate with a time of 19:00.6, good for 31st, and her best mark at the Championships

Junior Anna Lastra in her third New England Championships, saw her best finish, placing 36th with a time of 19:05.5, while classmate Alyssa Freeman followed in 40th place with a time of 19:10.6.

Freshmen Siobhan O'Keefe and Isabella Kennedy in their first New England Championship placed 44th and 46th, respectively, clocking in very close within one another. O'Keefe finished the race in 19:12.6, while Kennedy ran the course in 19:12.9.

The women's sub varsity squad finished in fourth place out of 12 teams and totaling 104 points.

The Skyhawks will take a week off before competing at the 6th Annual Bruce Kirsh Cross Country Cup in Hopkinton, New Hampshire at the Hopkinton State Fairgrounds, hosted by Franklin Pierce University on Saturday, October 20.
