Skyhawks looking for seventh title in eight years
HOPKINTON, N.H. (November 5, 2016) – The Stonehill College women's cross country team, ranked 13th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II poll, and ranked first in the East Region, will attempt to capture its seventh East Regional Championship in eight years and guarantee its 17th-straight trip to the NCAA Division II Championships this Sunday at the Hopkinton Fair Grounds in Hopkinton, New Hampshire.
Stonehill won the Northeast-10 Championship two weekends ago at home on campus, in dominating fashion, placing seven runners in the top 15 overall, and finishing ahead of the runners-up by 42 points. Seven Stonehill athletes earned All-Conference accolades, senior Nicole Borofski (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) was named Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year, and freshman Danika Wayss (Warwick, R.I./Pilgrim) was tabbed as the NE-10 Rookie of the Year. Head coach Karen Boen won her 14th Women's Coach of the Year Award as well.
Senior co-captain Borofski, a four-time All-Northeast-10 honoree, is coming off a career-best first-place finish at the NE-10 Championships as she continues to be Stonehill's top performer this season. The Plymouth, Massachusetts native also finished first in the college division at the National Catholic Championship earlier this year, and placed first among DII runners at the New England Championships. At last year's East Region meet, Borofski finished first overall to earn her third selection to the All-East Region team.
Classmate Aisha McAdams (North Kingstown, Rhode Island/North Kingstown) will be aiming for her third top-15 finish this season, as she came in seventh place in the college division at the National Catholic Championship and 15th at the Northeast-10 Conference Championship. McAdams tallied 15th at last years' East Regional picking up her second All-East Region selection.
Alexandra Buonfiglio (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) looks to pick up her fourth top-10 finish this season as she has placed fifth at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational and sixth at the Skyhawks Preview Meet and the NE-10 Conference Championship. The senior tallied her best time at the Paul Short Invitational with a mark of 22:11 this season. In last season's Regional, Buonfiglio tallied a 17th-place mark with a time of 22:17.
Sophomore Makenzie Cyr (Douglas, Mass./Douglas) has recorded three top-15 marks and looks to extend that this weekend. Her best mark of fourth this season was at the Skyhawk Preview Meet, while her best time came at last years' East Regional with a time of 22:02.
Classmate to Cyr, Elizabeth Hannon (Franklin, Mass./Bishop Feehan) aims to pick up her third top-15 result, as she placed 10th at the New England Championship and 11th at the Northeast-10 Championship. Hannon recorded a fifth-place mark in last years' East Regional with a time of 21:55.
NE-10 Rookie of the Year, Wayss tallied three top-20 results this year including a fifth-place mark at the Skyhawk Preview Meet, 14th place at the NE-10 Championship and 19th place at the National Catholic Championship. Classmate, Anna Lastra (Bridgton, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) will also be appearing in her first East Regional, as she tallied three top-15 marks this year. She finished second at the New England Championships in the sub-varsity division, 10th at the NE-10 Championship and 12th at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational.
With a top-three finish on Saturday, Stonehill would advance to its 17th-consecutive NCAA Division II National Championship. The event will take place in Saint Leo, Florida hosted by Saint Leo University on Saturday, November 19
