Skyhawks Claim Third Place at Codfish Bowl

DORCHESTER, Mass. (September 24, 2011) – The Stonehill College women's cross country team, ranked 14th in the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) Division II National Rankings, finished third overall at the 44th Annual Codfish Bowl on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Park.

Boston University took top honors notching 47 points while the Greater Boston Track Club finished second with 50 points and Stonehill ranked third with 72 points. Among all Division II schools and Northeast-10 (NE-10) Conference teams at the Codfish Bowl, Stonehill placed first with its 72-point showing.

Freshman Brianna Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) paced the Skyhawks cruising through the 5-kilometer course in 19 minutes and 12 seconds for an 11th place finish overall.

Venturo's time of 19:12 was the fastest among any Division II athletes at the invitational and fourth fastest among all collegiate athletes. The top-10 finishers in the meet consisted of seven unattached or club runners and three runners from Boston University, a Division I program.

Junior Stephanie Wilson (Wayzata, Minn./Hopkins) followed Venturo with a 17th place finish overall covering the 5-kilometer course in 19:26. Sarah Biggers (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland) came in at 19:40 (20th overall) while Emily Regan (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson Regional) posted a time of 19:41 (22nd overall) and Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) finished in 19 minutes and 50 seconds (25th overall) to round out Stonehill's top-five.

The Skyhawks return to action on Saturday, October 8 at the New England Championships at Franklin Park in Dorchester, Mass. at 1:15 p.m.
