Skyhawks Look To Fend Off Yellow Jackets In The NE-10 Tournament

 

Easton, Mass. - The Skyhawks look to win their first conference tournament match in over a decade when they travel Pace University for the Northeast-10 Conference tounament Friday November 14 and Saturday November 15.  Four seed Stonehill matches up against the fifth seed AIC Yellow Jackets on Friday at 5:30 as they seek to beat the Yellow Jackets for the second time in as many weeks.  The Skyhawks are 20-10 on the year and 8-6 in NE-10 play, while the Yellow Jackets come into the match with a record of 12-12 and an 8-6 record in conference play but lost to Stonehill in their only match of the season. 

It's Been A While...
2008 marks the first time in four years that the Skyhawks are making an appearance the NE-10 Tournament. 

Double Your Pleasure
The Skyhawks have doubled their win total in each of the past two seasons, finishing with five wins in 2006, ten in 2007 and 20 in 2008. 

The Big 2-0
Stonehill's 20 wins is the most the Skyhawks have had since they went 23-8 in 1997. 

Preseason Predictions?
The Skyhawks were picked to finish ninth in the NE-10 preseason poll after concluding the 2007 season 5-9 in the conference. 

Jump Around
The 2008 Stonehill squad's 10 game improvement from the previous season is the second largest turnaround in school history, just behind the 1993 squad that was 11 games better than the 1992 team. 

You Play To Win The Game
The Skyhawks have won seven of their last eight conference matches to finish at 8-6 after starting out 1-5 in NE-10 play. 

Dead Aim
Sophomore Erin Johnson's (Centerville, Mass.) .280 attack percentage is the highest for a player with at least 150 kills since Jessica Batcha hit .381 in 1998. 

Thorn in Your Side
Freshman Michelle Thornhill's (Canyon Lake, Calif.) ranks first on the team and fourth in the NE-10 10 with 3.00 kills per set. 

Smokin'
Michelle Thornhill has had at least 15 kills in each of her last four matches, including a career high 20 kills twice. 

Ready, Set...
Sophomore Andrea Wirth (Mesa, Ariz.) leads the team with 922 assists and has averaged 11.66 assists per set over the team's last eight matches. 

Aces Wild
Senior Katherine Masson (Acushnet, Mass.) leads the team with 55 services aces and her .54 aces per set ranks 25th in the country and fourth in the conference. 

A Grand Ole' Time
Against Southern New Hampshire Katherine Masson became just the fifth player in school history to record 1000 kills. 

From Far And Wide
The Skyhawks have 14 players from nine different states. 

The Iron(wo)man
Freshman Laura Huselton (Penfield, N.Y.) is the only Skyhawk to play in all 105 sets this year.  The freshman is fifth on the team in kills, fourth in digs and fourth in blocks. 

Diggin It
Sophomore Therese Mance (Milwaukee, Wis.) leads the team with 289 digs and 3.04 digs per set in her first season with the Skyhawks. 

Block Party
Sophomore Laura Noonan (Hampstead, N.H.) leads Stonehill with 83 total blocks, more than twice as many as the next highest player on the team.  Noonan has a career average of .82 blocks per set and 168 in two years. 

There's No Place Like Home
The Skyhawks have been dominant at Merkert Gymnasium this season.  They have won their last seven home matches and also an impressive 12-2 overall, with their only losses coming against Pace and St. Rose. 

Upping the Ante
In conference play this season Michelle Thornhill is averaging 3.31 kills per set and Katherine Masson is hitting a team high .257 in conference play with 3.09 kills per set.
