Freshmen Lead Skyhawks To First Win

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - It finally came together for the Skyhawks. Behind a career-high 50 assists from freshman Andrea Wirth (Mesa, Ariz.) and an impressive double-double from fellow freshman Justine Thompson (Merrimack, N.H.) Stonehill won its first match of the season, a hard-fought five-game thriller over host Molloy College.

The 3-2 win over the Lions gives first-year head coach Eric Snyder his first head coaching victory.

The Skyhawks came out flying, winning game one in convincing fashion, hitting a season-best .435 en route to the 30-17 advantage. The teams traded the next two games, with Molloy winning game two 31-29, but Stonehill bounced back to take game three 30-17.

The Lions pushed the match to a fifth game with a 32-30 win in game four after rallying from a 12-3 deficit early in the game.

Stonehill, however, took control early in game five, jumping out to a 12-5 lead and held on for a 15-12 win.

Thompson finished with career-highs in kills (13) and digs (18), while Katherine Masson (Acushnet, Mass.) added 17 kills and eight digs. Heidi Woerner (North Kingstown, R.I.) chipped in with 15 kills and Erin Johnson (Centerville, Mass.) stuffed the stat sheet with nine kills, five digs and five block assists.

Stonehill returns to action on Monday when it travels to Colby-Sawyer for a 7 p.m. match with the Chargers.
