Women's Tennis Seals NE10 Tournament Top Seed at Bentley, 8-1

Vo leads three double-winners as Skyhawks clinch at least share of NE10 regular season championship

WALTHAM, Mass. (October 19, 2017) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 6 in the latest Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, clinched the top seed for the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Tournament with an 8-1 victory over Bentley University in NE10 women's tennis action at Rieger Tennis Courts, on the campus of Brandeis University, this afternoon.

In addition to sewing up the top seed for next week's NE10 Tournament, Stonehill has also clinched at least a share of its eighth NE10 regular season championship, a title it could claim outright with a win in its NE10 regular season finale on Saturday. Sophomore Alexandra Vo (Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania/Nazareth Academy) led three double-winners for the Skyhawks with wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles. She teamed up with classmate Annelise Howick (Jacksonville, Florida/Creekside) to close out a sweep of the three doubles matches with their 9-7 triumph at No. 1. Vo followed that up with a 6-1, 6-4 singles decision against Bentley senior Rachel Hui (Hong Kong).

Senior Colleen O'Donnell (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) and freshman Kate Cunningham (Somerset, England/IMG Academy (Fla.)) rounded out Stonehill's players with both singles and doubles wins. Cunningham and senior Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) claimed an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles, and then Cunningham picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles against senior Katie Brandow (East Northport, New York/Northport).

O'Donnell and freshman Bethany Hammond (Belgrade, Maine/St. Dominic's) cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles for Stonehill. O'Donnell followed that with a 6-3, 6-2 win against senior Jill Kamphaus (Walpole, Massachusetts/Ursuline Academy) at No. 6 singles. Junior Nicole Downey (Groveland, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) and freshman Isabelle Porter (Jupiter, Florida/William T. Dwyer) each chipped in with singles wins for the Skyhawks.

Junior Hannah Fabianski (Pawcatuck, Connecticut/Stonington) earned Bentley's lone point with her 7-5, 4-6, 10-0 victory at No. 1 singles against Barbetta.

Stonehill (12-0, 11-0 NE10) close out its regular schedule on Saturday, when it visits The College of Saint Rose for an NE10 matchup at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks next home match will be an NE10 semifinal n Friday, October 27. Bentley (9-5, 6-5 NE10) caps its fall season at Franklin Pierce University tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
