Dapron cards first eagle in program history during opening round 80

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. (October 21, 2019) -  Stonehill College turned in a solid opening round team score at the Inaugural Chippewa Invitational, hosted by Central Michigan University, at the 5,966-yard, par-72, layout of the Birmingham Country Club today.

Freshman Julia Dapron and sophomore Alexis Annarummo led the way for Stonehill, which posted a solid 335 team score while competing against its toughest field on the longest course over its program's three year history. Dapron carded the first eagle in program history on the 488-yard par-5 14th hole, to go with seven pars and nothing higher than a bogey on her way to an opening round 80 on Monday, tied for 32nd in the field of 86 golfers. Dapron hit a three-wood to six feet on her second shot on the 14th and then holed out the eagle putt, finishing her day ranked second in the field for par-5 scoring, shooting one-under-par on the four holes.

Annarummo is tied for 39th overall after carding an 81 today, with a birdie and eight pars, shooting a three-over-par 39 on the back nine. Sophomore Sloane Van Zanen and freshman Abby Jaye followed for the Skyhawks with 87s. Van Zanen recorded a pair of birdies and four pars during her round, posting a four on the par-5 first hole and then recording a two on the par-3 third on the hardest handicapped hole on the course. Jaye had ten pars over her round, shooting a five-over-par 41 on the back nine.

Junior Katelyn Jylkka posted an opening round 88 with two birdies, entered as an individual this week. She carded a four on the par-5 first hole and then a three on the par-4 17th, adding four pars on the front for a five-over-par 41 on the opening nine. Freshman Emily Kase birdied the par-4 sixth hole and finished with a round of 93, while sophomore Emma Beaulieu posted a 96 and senior Jennifer Kornacki registered a 106 for the Skyhawks today.

Stonehill sits in 13th place in the team standings with its 335 team score today, trailing Division I Niagara University (331) by four strokes. Western Michigan University (300) leads the field that includes nine Division I and four Division II programs, including a Grand Valley State University team ranked No. 16 in Division II. Grand Valley (306) sits in second in the team standings, while Northwood (Mich.) University (307) rounds out the top three. Saranlak Tumfong from the University of Toledo and Grand Valley State's Katie Chipman, the No. 5-ranked women's golfer in Division II, share the individual lead with even-par rounds of 72 on Monday.

Stonehill brings its fall season to a close with second round play at the Chippewa Invitational tomorrow, with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.
