Roderigue Named As WBCA's Stoner Scholarship Award Recipient, Will Be Honored At Division I Women's Final Four This Weekend

March 29, 2006

The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) has selected Bethany Roderigue of Stonehill College as the winner of the Charles T. Stoner Law Scholarship Award. The $1,000 Charles T. Stoner Law Scholarship Award, named for and presented by Stoner, a former legal consultant for the WBCA, is presented annually to one female collegiate basketball player who intends to pursue a career in law.

"The WBCA is pleased to present the Charles T. Stoner Law Scholarship Award to Bethany Roderigue," said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. "Bethany has demonstrated an unprecedented devotion on and off the court and we wish her continued success in her future endeavors."

Roderigue, a native of Winslow, Maine and a graduate of Winslow High School, is a criminology major with a minor in sociology at Stonehill, holding a 3.12 GPA overall and earning a 3.55 GPA this past semester. During the summer of 2005, she completed an internship with the Kennebec County District Attorney's office in Augusta, Maine that confirmed her desire to continue her education in law.

On the court, the senior guard served as a co-captain for the Head Coach Trisha Brown's Skyhawks this past season and helped lead Stonehill to its highest win total in eight years at 24-7 overall. The Skyhawks finished second in the final Northeast-10 Conference regular season standings and earned their third NCAA Division II tournament berth in four seasons, advancing to the Northeast Regional semi-finals before falling to eventual national runner-up American International. During her down time she has been involved in the Special Olympics program that takes place at Stonehill College and helped organize Stonehill's Youth Basketball Outreach program in surrounding towns.

"This award really affirms Bethany's hard work and commitment both on and off the floor," Brown says of Roderigue's honor. "She has been a solid representative of our program as a player and will continue to be an ambassador for Stonehill upon her graduation."

Roderigue will be honored at the WBCA Awards Luncheon presented by State Farm and Jostens on Sunday, April 2 at 12:30 p.m. (ET) in the Hynes Convention Center Ballroom. The luncheon is part of the 2006 WBCA National Convention, held in Boston, Mass. in conjunction with the NCAA® Women's Final Four®. This year the WBCA celebrates it's Silver Anniversary, marking 25 years of existence.

Founded in 1981, the WBCA promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game in all of its aspects as an amateur sport for women and girls.
