Stonehill Suffers Sweep At Franklin Pierce

Ravens pile up 22 runs in two wins over Skyhawks

RINDGE, N.H. (April 17, 2014) – Stonehill College had its five-game winning streak snapped tonight with a pair of losses at Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Northeast Division softball action at the Bisaccia Softball Complex. Stonehill dropped the opener, 8-7 in eight innings, before losing the second contest by a 14-8 score.

Stonehill was powered offensively by sophomore Megan Ruonavaara (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill), who went 3-for-8 with two doubles and five RBI. Freshman Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) went 4-for-9 with three doubles and two RBI, while senior Brianna Gunter (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) was 4-for-8 and knocked in a pair of runs.

Sophomore Courtney Caputo (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) had a monster day at the plate for Franklin Pierce, as she went 5-for-8 with a double, a home run, and eight RBI to lead the Ravens to a sweep. Classmate Melissa Morgan (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) went 5-for-7 with a double, a home run, and five RBI, while sophomore Erin Wood (Dover, N.Y./Dover) was 3-for-7 with a home run and three RBI.  

Franklin Pierce 8, Stonehill 7 

Playing in its second consecutive eight-inning contest, Stonehill fell 8-7 to Franklin Pierce after letting a three-run lead slip away in the seventh. Stonehill scored three times in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Ruonavaara, a passed ball, and an RBI single by Gunter to go up 5-1.

After Franklin Pierce got a run back in the bottom half of the fifth and both teams scored a pair of runs in the sixth, Stonehill held a 7-4 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh.

The Ravens scored three times with the help of RBI singles by Caputo and Wood and an error to send the game to an eighth inning, where they would eventually win on an RBI single by Morgan.    

Franklin Pierce 14, Stonehill 8  

Stonehill took a three-run lead in the first inning of game two, highlighted by a two-run double to left field off the bat of Ruonavaara. The Skyhawks added two more runs in the second, as senior Jocelynne Morrell (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) recorded an RBI triple, but Franklin Pierce got three runs back in the bottom half of the inning.

The Ravens would score three more times in the third on a three-run shot by Morgan, before taking the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a four-run outburst. The Skyhawks plated a run in the top of the sixth, but Franklin Pierce's offense stayed hot with another four-run frame in the bottom of the inning to go up 14-7. Stonehill would score one more time in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by sophomore Katherine Melanson (Danvers, Mass./Bishop Fenwick), but the deficit proved too large to overcome.

Stonehill (18-16, 13-7 NE-10) and Franklin Pierce (7-17, 6-11 NE-10) will be back in action on Saturday with another doubleheader beginning at noon.
