Skyhawks finish second as team with Connecticut College winning event 

EASTON, Mass. (September 14, 2015) – Stonehill College finished second in the team standings in its season-opening Doubles Invitational at Charles Watt Tennis Courts over the weekend.

Connecticut College won the team title at the Invitational with 86 points over the four doubles flights, winning the B and C flights. Host Stonehill was second with 77 points, with sophomores Tom Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) and Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) winning the A-Doubles Championship. College of the Holy Cross (72 points) and Eastern Nazarene College (29 points) finished third and fourth as a team, respectively.

Bellio and Buckley won all three matches in the A-Doubles bracket to win the flight title, earning Stonehill 26 points towards its team total. The Skyhawks duo clipped Jonathan Kraiger and Ben Sachs of Connecticut College in a tiebreaker 9-8 (9-7). Bellio/Buckley also defeated the Holy Cross team of Henry Harrs and Michael Varda 8-6 and Shaw Campbell and David Streelman from Eastern Nazarene 9-7.

Ethan Hacker and Will Cannon from Connecticut College won the B-Doubles bracket, while the Camels Patrick Farrell and Charlie Williams took the C-Doubles title. Seniors Philip Klados (Lake Forest, California/Santa Margarita Catholic) and Gerard Tierney (Marshfield, Massachusetts/Marshfield) posted a 2-1 record for Stonehill in the C-flight bracket. They defeated Eastern Nazarene's Yahalel Carter and Steven Crooks, 8-2 and then posted an 8-1 win over Elmar Lutz and Ming Lao from Holy Cross.

The Holy Cross tandem of Johnny McAluffie and Brian Gurski won the D-Flight bracket. Stonehill sophomore Jeffrey Gagnon (Providence, Rhode Island/The Wheeler School) and freshman Michael Doody (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles Academy) split their two matches in the flight, posting an 8-6 win against Connecticut College's Johnny Cissel and Grant Holoschutz.

Stonehill (0-0, 0-0 NE-10) opens its fall dual match schedule on Wednesday when it hosts Clark University for a non-conference match at Watt Courts at 4 p.m.
