The Mavericks are coming off of a 88-83 defeat at the hands of New York Tech last Wednesday. They were led by junior Michael Marin's 27 points and Paul Flowers' 22 points and nine rebounds. Marin and senior Chanze Wellington are the team's leading scorers at 14.4 and 14.1 points respectively. Flowers, who also averages 8.7 rebounds a game, is the third Maverick averaging double figures at 10.7 a night. Wellington is shooting a robust 50 percent from behind the arc (20-for-40), a place in which more than half of his made shots come from. Mercy has struggled from the field however, shooting just 36 percent as a team and is getting outrebounded by nearly 10 boards a game under first year head coach Tony Staffiere.
About Stonehill ...
The Skyhawks enter tonight's game with a 6-6 overall
record, having claimed a victory in their most recent contest, a
59-56 win over Bryant last Wednesday. Stonehill is led by the duo
of juniors Matt Hall (Springfield, Mass.) and
Nick Smith (Colonia, N.J.) who are averaging a
combined 31.1 points per game. They are making 42 percent of their
shots from behind the arc, with Hall connecting on a team-best 29.
As a team the Skyhawks have made 103 three pointers, the second
most in the Northeast-10 behind only St. Michael's 117 triples.
Randall Stallworth (Toms River, N.J.) leads the
team and is second in the Northeast-10 at 5.3 assists a game. So
far this season he has 64 helpers, giving him 209 in 40 career
games.
Hometown Heroes
Stonehill feature three players, Nick
Smith, A.J. Rudowitz and Vince
Rosario who are their high school's all-time leading
scorer from the Greater Middlesex Conference in New Jersey. Smith
sits atop Colonia's list with 1,771 points, while Rudowitz's 1,536
is the most at Monore. Freshman Vince Rosario's 1,946 is first at
Cardinal McCarrick and seventh in the 30-team Conference.
Straight Shooter
Even though Matt Hall spends a great deal
of time on the perimeter, he is still one of the Northeast-10's
most accurate shooters. He ranks eighth in the Conference in field
goal percentage (55 percent) and ninth in three point percentage
(46 percent).
A Win Is A Win
The Skyhawks win over Bryant was their first victory of
the season that didn't come by double digits. Prior to that win,
Stonehill had won its first five games by an average of 14.4
points.
Charity Case
Stonehill is the top free throw shooting team in the
Northeast-10 at 81 percent. A.J. Rudowitz is
fourth in the Conference from the charity stripe at 91 percent,
while Nick Smith (86 percent) and Randall
Stallworth (82 percent) also rank in the top 15 in the
NE-10.
So We Meet Again
In last year's matchup, Nick Smith posted
13 points and 10 rebounds as Stonehill opened up a 22 point lead at
one point and cruised to a 72-55 win at the Arena at Harbor Yard.
Colin Scanlon had six ass sits and seven rebounds
while A.J. Rudowitz added eight points and six
rebounds, as the Skyhawks connected on 12-of-27 three pointers.
