Genovese notches 11-save shutout, Skyhawks clinch first round bye 

WORCESTER, Mass. (November 15, 2014) –  Stonehill College, ranked fifth in this week's Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll and first in the NCAA Division II North Regional rankings, clinched a first round bye for the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Tournament with a 1-0 triumph over 9th-ranked Assumption College in NE-10 field hockey action at Multi-Sport Stadium this afternoon.

Stonehill (15-3, 9-2 NE-10) clinches a first round bye in next week's Northeast-10 Tournament and will host a semifinal round game at W.B. Mason Stadium on Thursday, November 20, at 4 p.m. The Skyhawks will face the winner of Tuesday's first round matchup between third-seeded Adelphi University and sixth-seeded Bentley University. Assumption (12-6, 7-4 NE-10) will be seeded either fourth or fifth in next week's NE-10 Tournament and will play a first round match on Tuesday, November 18, against American International College.

Senior Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Maryland/North Harford) preserved the win with 11 saves to post her fourth shutout of the season (seventh career) in the Stonehill cage. Assumption posted a 15-12 edge in shots on the afternoon, but was unable to breach the Skyhawks goal. Stonehill held a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners. Senior Lauren Neilan (Mendon, Massachusetts/Nipmuc Regional) posted five saves for the Greyhounds.

Stonehill junior Lauren Giordano (Watertown, Massachusetts/Watertown) scored the lone goal of the afternoon when she got a stick to a drive from the top of the circle by senior All-American Emily Sideris (Watertown, Massachusetts/Watertown) off a corner and tipped in her 11th goal of the season with 3:29 left in the second half. Genovese did the rest, posting five saves in the second half to seal the victory.
