River Hawks score four second half goals in 14-minute span

LOWELL, Mass. (September 22, 2010) – The University of Massachusetts Lowell, ranked third in this week's Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, scored four second half goals to claim a 4-0 victory over 9th-ranked Stonehill College in a non-conference field hockey matchup at Cushing Field tonight.

Senior Katie Enaire (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) led UMass Lowell with two goals, while classmates Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury) and Liz Day (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) both added a goal and assist in the victory. Junior Abby Auld (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) and sophomore Emily Painten (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) each chipped in with an assist.

Freshman Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass./Harwich) posted her sixth shutout of the season with eight saves on the night for UMass Lowell. Senior Courtney Osier (South Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) registered nine stops in goal for Stonehill. UML finished with a 21-13 advantage in shots for the contest, including an 11-5 margin in the second half, and a 15-9 edge in penalty corners (11-4 second half).

The game was scoreless for over 50-minutes before UMass Lowell broke through 16:56 into the second half when Macy netted her ninth goal of the year with a blast from the far side of the arc off a pass by Day off a corner. That started a four-goal flurry for the River Hawks over the span of 14-minutes.

Enaire doubled the UML lead less than four minutes later off a feed from Auld following a rebound off a corner at 55:54. Day scored her sixth of the season, assisted by Macy, at 60:30, before Enaire collected her second marker of the night (ninth of the season) after a pass from Painten at 65:49 to round out the scoring.

Stonehill nearly opened the scoring moments before UMass Lowell opening goal, but UML senior Jaime Hadley (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) stopped a shot from Skyhawks freshman Devin Ingersoll (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) at 50:37.

Stonehill (3-4, 0-0 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Saint Anselm College at noon. UMass Lowell (7-0, 0-0 NE-10) visits American International College for an NE-10 contest on Saturday at noon.
