Merrimack Takes Two from Baseball in Doubleheader

Carey hit 3-for-7 with one run scored

WESTWOOD, Mass. (April 8, 2017) – The Stonehill College baseball team dropped doubleheader to Merrimack Saturday, April 8 at Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, Massachusetts.

Game 1: Merrimack 5 – Stonehill 2

For Stonehill, Alexander Joyce (Newton, Massachusetts/Newton North) and Patrick Downey (Cheshire, Connecticut/Xavier) tallied the RBI for the Skyhawks, while Joyce batted 1-for-2 and Downey drove in the run off a sacrifice fly. Tyler Carey (Raynham, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) went 2-for-5 with one run scored and a double.

The Skyhawks scored the first run of the game in the top of the first with two outs, as Carey scored from second off of a single to left field  by Joe Klingensmith (Topsfield, Massachusetts/Masconomet).

Stonehill extended its lead to two, 2-0 with one out, as Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) reached first on an error and advanced on a single to center field by Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton). Joyce walked to load the bases as Downey was able to send a long ball to left field for a sacrifice fly, scoring Lee from third.

The Skyhawks' lead lasted until the bottom of the sixth, when the Warriors connected on three hits to score two runs, tying the game at two, 2-2. Tyler Lyne ended up on third after singling, stealing second and advancing on a wild pitch. Joey Porricelli singled to right field to score Lyne and Cam DiSarcina doubled to center field to easily pick up the tying RBI. 

Merrimack took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh after scoring three runs off of three hits. With two outs, the Warriors Mike Forgione singled to center field and advanced to second on a base hit from Lyne. Merrimack got the bases loaded with two outs after Porricelli walked and Forgione scored, as DiSarcina walked. Nicholson came up to bat and drove the ball to right field adding two more runs on the board from Lyne and Porricelli scoring, 5-2.

Stonehill left two runners on base in the eighth and ninth, unable to get back on top of Merrimack.

Game 2: Merrimack 7 – Stonehill 1

Stonehill's Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) tallied his third homerun of the season for the Skyhawk's only RBI of the game in the top of the first as the leadoff batter.

Merrimack rallied in the second and third innings to score six runs for a five-run lead, 6-1. Matthew Ronai led off the bottom of the second with a single to shortstop and advanced to third on Ryan Petrone's single to right center. The bases became loaded as Thomas Joyce walked and with no outs, Chris Cimmino doubled to right center, clearing the bases for a three-run RBI. DiSarcina later flied out to right field scoring Forgione from third for the fourth run of the second inning.

The bottom of the third was led off by a Petrone solo homerun to right center by Ronai and Cimmino later doubled down the left field line, scoring Petrone from third, extending Merrimack's lead to five, 6-1.

Both teams were scoreless for four innings, as Stonehill tallied one hit and Merrimack recorded three hits. In the bottom of the eighth, the Warriors extended its lead to six, 7-1, as Cimmino hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Joyce from third.

Baseball (7-16, 2-4 NE10) hosts Le Moyne College tomorrow, Sunday, April 9 on Lou Gorman Field for a its first home doubleheader of the season.
