Baseball Falters in Season Opener

Junior Steve Lee records four hits in bright spot for Skyhawks

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (February 25, 2016) – The Stonehill College baseball team opened its 2016 campaign this evening with a 23-4 loss to Mercy College at the Ripken Experience Northeast Challenge in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Junior infielder Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) led Stonehill at the plate, as he went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a RBI and a run scored. Junior outfielder Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) went 2-for-4, while freshman second baseman Matt Rocco (Newington, Connecticut/Newington) drew two walks and scored a run.

Junior lefthander Jeremy Roberts (Reading, Massachusetts/Malden Catholic) got the start on the mound for the Skyhawks and gave up two earned runs over three innings of work while striking out four and walking three. Freshman lefty Aran Hamilton-Grenham (Woburn, Massachusetts/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) took over in the sixth and logged 4.0 frames, allowing three unearned runs while striking out four and walking four.

Sophomore second baseman Nick Arcabascio (Brooklyn, New York/Xaverian) and junior third baseman Randal Mendez (New York, New York/A. Philip Randolph) paced the Mavericks offensively, combining for 15 RBI's on seven hits including two homeruns and six runs. Freshman Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, New York/Tottenville) finished the night going 3-for-4 with five runs. Graduate Student Matt Snyder (Albany, New York/University of Kentucky) took the ball for Mercy and lasted five innings, striking out seven and giving up one unearned run.

Mercy got its offense going early, scoring five runs in the top of the second and three in the third, all on unearned runs. The Mavericks would plate four more in the fourth inning before Stonehill finally got on the board when Lee doubled and came around on a wild pitch.

Mercy continued to roll offensively, plating five runs in the fifth and six runs in the sixth. Stonehill capped the scoring in the seventh inning, when Lee recorded his second double of the game, scoring sophomore Isiah Nunez (Brooklyn, New York/Berkshire School). Freshman Patrick Downey (Cheshire, Connecticut/Xavier) followed that up with an RBI single and sophomore catcher Justin Nicklas (Foxboro, Massachusetts/St. Sebastian's) reached first base on an error by the second baseman, scoring Lee from third.

Stonehill (0-1-0, 0-0 NE-10) will look to bounce back tomorrow morning as they play their second and third game of the Ripken Experience Northeast Challenge against Queens (N.Y.) College. Mercy (1-0-0, 0-0 ECC) returns to action tomorrow as well, taking on Franklin Pierce University.
