Skyhawks finish second with one point shy of first place

AMHERST, N.Y. (November 4, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's cross country team, ranked first in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) East Regional polls and 25th in national polls, finished as the runner up at the NCAA Division II East Regional Championship Saturday afternoon at the Audobon Golf Course, hosted by Daemen College.
This is 17th-consecutive NCAA Division II Championship ticket punched for the women.
Stonehill, which saw four runners post All-East Region performances on the day, finished with 46 points, just one point shy of the champion, Assumption College, who totaled 45 points. Third place Roberts Wesleyan University (110 points), fourth place Merrimack College (184) and American International College (192) rounded out the top five.
Stonehill saw senior captain Emily Knox (Worcester, Massachusetts/Notre Dame Academy) take the program's third-straight individual title in the East Regional Championship, as she collected her first and Nicole Borofski '17 earned the previous two. Knox finished 15 seconds ahead of the runner up from Assumption, as she crossed the finish line at 22:43. 6, good for her third-career All-Region honor.
Junior Makenzie Cyr (Douglas, Massachusetts/Douglas) was the next Skyhawk to cross the finish with a time of 23:11.7, as she placed fourth in the field of 173 competitors. This was also her third All-Region honor, as she had a career-best 10th-place finish in the race her freshman year and she took home 16th last season.

Sam Curtin (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) was the first freshman to cross the finish line in the championship, as she followed Cyr with a fifth-place mark and a time of 23:11.7, good for her first All-East Region accolade.
Sophomore Alyssa Freeman (Billerica, Massachusetts/Billerica Memorial) rounded out the All-Region selections for the Skyhawks with her 10th-place finish. Freeman clocked in at 23:28.2 competing her first NCAA Championship.
Freshman Sophia Anderle (Peabody, Massachusetts/Peabody Veterans Memorlai) also ran in her first NCAA Championship, as she placed 26th with a time of 24:36.4, good for the Skyhawk's fifth runner across the finish.
Sophomore Anna Lastra (Bridgton, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) and senior captain Abby Hersom (Rockland, Maine/Oceanside) rounded out the Stonehill competitors with 36th and 46th place, respectively. Lastra clocked in at 24:36.4, while Hersom crossed the finish with a time of 24:54.6.
Following today's East Regional Championship, Stonehill will begin preparing for its 17th-straight ticket to the NCAA Division II Championship in Evansville, Indiana, hosted by the University of Indiana, on Saturday, November 18.
