Women’s Cross Country Takes Title at Kutztown DII/III Challenge

Knox took second place for the Skyhawks

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (September 16, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's cross country team, ranked first in the East Region and 20th nationally by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, finished first at the Kutztown DII/III Challenge in Kutztown, Pennsylvania Saturday morning.

The Skyhawks totaled 51 points at the event, while Malone University placed second with 64 points and West Chester University finished third with 129 points. Shippensburg University took fourth with 141 points, as Kutztown University rounded out the top five with 148 points.

Senior Emily Knox (Worcester, Massachusetts/Notre Dame Academy) led the way for Stonehill, finishing second with a time of 22:40.6 in the six-kilometer race. Junior Makenzie Cyr (Douglas, Massachusetts/Douglas) finished the race with a time of 22:57.9, good for sixth overall. Freshman Sam Curtin (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) rounded out the top-10 competitors with a 10th-place finish and a time of 23:40.6.

Senior Abby Hersom (Rockland, Maine/Oceanside) and sophomore Alyssa Freeman (Billerica, Massachusetts/Billerica) tallied the last set of points for the Skyhawks finishing 15th and 18th overall. Hersom clocked in at 23:59.2, while Freeman crossed the finish at 24:07.8.

Freshman Sophia Anderle (Peabody, Massachusetts/Peabody Veterans Memorial) made her first appearance in the Purple and White as she finished 29th with a time of 24:32.8, as junior Elizabeth Hannon (Franklin, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan) followed behind her with a time of 24:33.0 in the field of 195 competitors.

Stonehill will race in the Codfish Bowl on Saturday, September 23 at Franklin Park in Dorchester, Massachusetts.
