No. 21 Women’s Cross Country Open Season with Shacklette Invitational Title

Schultz takes the top spot for the Skyhawks

MANCHESTER, N.H. (September 2, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's cross country team, ranked 21st overall in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) Division II poll, tallied its first title of the season at the Shacklette Invitational, Saturday morning, in Manchester, New Hampshire.
 
The Skyhawks tallied 31 points for the first-place mark, as Northeast-10 Conference foe Assumption College followed in second place with 45 points. Merrimack College took third place with 79 points, and Saint Anselm College and Bentley University rounded out the top-five teams collecting 124 and 126 points, respectively. Saint Michael's College and NHTI, Concord's Community College finished sixth (133 points) and seventh (225 points), respectively.

Senior Julie Schultz (Billerica, Massachusetts/Billerica) was the first Skyhawk across the finish line as she captured third with a time of 19:40 in the five-kilometer race hosted by Saint Anselm College. Sophomore Alyssa Freeman (Billerica, Massachusetts/Billerica Memorial) and freshman Sam Curtin (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) followed Schultz for fourth and fifth place. Freeman clocked in at 19:43, as Curtin was two seconds behind with a time of 19:45.

Sophomore Kelly Higgins (Weymouth, Massachusetts/Weymouth) and freshman Sophia Anderle (Peabody, Massachusetts/Peabody Veterans Memorial) wasn't far behind in the pack, as Higgins placed ninth with a time of 19:57 and Anderle rounded out the top 10 clocking in at 19:58, out of 81 competitors.

The final two Skyhawks that crossed the finish were juniors Jackie Cutillo (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan) and Jillian Caiazzi (Marlborough, Massachusetts/Marlborough). Cutillo finished 15th in 20:15, while Caiazzi was right behind with a time of 20:15, as well.

Stonehill travels to Kutztown, Pennsylvania on Saturday, September 16 the Division II/III Challenge hosted by Kutztown University.
