Plymouth, Massachusetts, native honored after capturing regional title
EASTON, Mass. (November 11, 2015) – Stonehill College junior co-captain Nicole Borofski (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) has been selected as the 2015 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Region Women's Athlete of the Year.
Borofski earns the award after leading Stonehill to both the NCAA Division II East Region and Northeast-10 Conference championships over the last three weeks. The junior completed the 6-kilometer course at the Hopkinton State Fairgrounds in Hopkinton, New Hampshire, in 21:12.5 to take first place at the NCAA East Regional, and become the first Stonehill region champion since Erin Carmone in 2009.
Borofski has had a banner year so far for the Skyhawks. The Plymouth, Massachusetts native has now won consecutive major championships, winning the Northeast-10 Conference Championship by 43 seconds, and the East Regional by 22 seconds. Borofski was the only female competitor at the NE-10 Championships to run a sub 6:00 mile and was the first individual women's NE-10 Champion from Stonehill since Meghan Shannahan in 2002.
Prior to the NE-10 Championships, Borofski took home a first place finish at the DII/ DIII Challenge, and then paced Stonehill to its highest finish in program history at the New England Championships. Borofski earned All-New England honors after clocking in at 17:54.2 on the five-kilometer course and also posted the fastest time ever for a Skyhawk at Franklin Park, topping the effort of Meghann Shanahan, '05, at the 2002 New England Championships by 21 seconds.
A 2013 graduate of Plymouth North High School, Borofski was a four-year letterwinner in both cross country and track for the Eagles. She earned All-State honors in cross country all four years, and served as a team captain for both cross country and track as a junior and senior.
Stonehill, ranked 16th in the most recent USTFCCCA Division II national poll and first in the East Region, concludes its season at the NCAA Division II Championships. The meet will be hosted by Missouri Southern State University, in Joplin, Missouri, on Saturday, November 21st.
